Publisher's summary

The unflappable Stone Barrington comes face to face with two men whose lives are wrapped in shadows and lies - and who both still feel the sting of betrayal they can never forget.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Hired by an odd client previously unknown to him, Stone arrives in London on a mission he thinks he understands but doesn't. Soon he finds himself not only out of his territory but out of his depth as well. Baffled as he is by the behavior of both his quarry and his client, Stone's life is further complicated by two, possibly three murders and the affectionate attentions of two former lovers. When the intelligence services of three countries become involved, he can only hang on for a wild ride and hope for a not-too-bumpy landing.

A great deal of fun.

A reasonably believable plot with charm wit and style in great London and English locations.

Ah, for the old days…

One of Woods’ best stories back in the day. Interesting characters and an intriguing plot. Too bad he doesn’t put this much effort into his work anymore.

Best of the Series so far

Although I missed Dino in the first half, I think this one was the most entertaining so far. I do wish Stone wash't such a complete knucklehead. Here, take my money. Sheesh. I"m sure this will all come around in the future and work itself out. This is my second go at the entire series and I have't read these early ones since they first came out. Am really enjoying them again.

Great story with an ending.

Great story from start to finish with a good pace. The book had a solid conclusion and wasn't an obvious pre-quel to the next. That was appreciated. The immaturity of the relationship between Stone and Arrington remains grating (both ways) as well as Stone's naīvete with the femme fatale he continues to associate. At this point in the series, at least 50% of his lovers have been a murderess. Not sure how he could have ever been a successful homicide detective, but that's what Dino is for. Thanks!

Ok, I guess I'm hooked after all!

Eventhough, all the characters sound like wild senior citizens (nothing wrong with that mind you), due to the older sounding voice of the narrator. Since this was one of the earlier installments, I see that the characters cocktail swigging, etc., lifestyles were already set early on. Otherwise it's all just jetsetting here and there, feather boas (just kidding), hefty bank accounts, some espionage, romps in various beds/partners, a few dead bodies, cigar puffing, name dropping, the right connections, and, of course, only the most acceptable cars. I will now start from the very beginning of this long series, and eat my hat.
