Publisher's summary

International bestselling author John Flanagan returns to world of Ranger's Apprentice in the sixth installment of the Royal Ranger series in which Maddie and Will must travel to Celtica to investigate a series of dire wolf attacks and a dangerous sorceress.

When Maddie and Will get a message that dire wolves—huge misshapen changelings, much larger than regular wolves—have been marauding and attacking through the hills and valleys of Celtica, the Rangers are sent on a mission to unravel just who or what is behind these dangerous creatures.

Will isn’t anxious to return to Celtica, especially approaching the Rift. And as they travel, Maddie must grapple with their growing dealings with the spiritual and supernatural. But they are Rangers—and they will do whatever it takes to accomplish their mission. After they receive some offers of help from locals, Will and Maddie learn the name of the sorceress behind these strange and dangerous attacks, Arazan, along with the location of her hideout.

On the way to take her down once and for all, the Rangers must face direwolves, wargals, dark magic, and more. And as Arazan’s desires lead her to the most evil of powers, Will and Maddie must form a plan of action that can outwit not just the sorceress but the darkest forces from the beyond.

This book should be rated teen.

I struggled with the black magic in the book. I don't think that it is appropriate for preteen readers.

Disappointing

Another great job done by Keating always enjoy his narrations. I was disappointed in this story though not his best work. I like magic but this series has gone so long without adding it now feels off at least in the way this story was told. If Mr. Flanagan reads this I hope in the future this will be just a bonus story and not referenced in future books. Story doesn’t really have a build up or twist and turns. From the moment you find out about the villain you can already figure out the rest of the story. I don’t see myself listening to it again.

Maddie & Will save the day again!

This is another interesting adventure for Maddie and Will involving some magic. Will comes up with the plans to get the necromancer, demon & dire wolf at their own game, but Maddie with quick thinking actually saves the day when the plans go awry. Another entertaining story showing Will’s guidance and Maddie’s maturity.

Quite disappointing

If the entire Ranger’s Apprentice series, this is the only one that I was disappointed in, and even had a hard time finishing. There were several things that were inconsistent with the rest of the books, and everything just seemed like a rehash of past storylines. Quite disappointing overall

Disappointed with introduction of the occult here

I have loved all of these books, except for this one. John Keating still does a great job with narrating, but I was very disappointed with the story this time.

I wouldn’t want young children being exposed to occult imagery and wording. I hope John Flanagan will not continue with this direction into the occult, but will continue with more similar books as to previous episodes.
