Publisher's summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

When Gervase Frant, Seventh Earl of St Erth, returns at last from Waterloo to his family seat at Stanyon, he enjoys a less than welcome homecoming. Only Theo, a cousin even quieter than himself, is there to greet him - and when he meets his stepmother and young half-brother he detects open disappointment that he survived the wars. But the dangers of the Lincolnshire countryside are quite different to those of the battlefield.

Georgette Heyer was the most successful and best-loved novelist of her day and The Quite Gentleman displays all the skills which won the hearts of her large and enduring audience.

good but troubling

I really enjoy Heyer and in many ways this is a good example. it is as much mystery as romance. the characters and dialogue are what we expect. That a young man's VERY BAD behavior is explained (not excused) by his youth and the young woman's "flirtatious" ways may make some readers want to skip this one.

Great recording

This Georgette Heyer novel is, as always, excellent. The narrator for this book was spot on in my opinion. The voices were distinct but not weird.

A fun, romantic novel by Georgette Heyer

I thought this was a fun romance with a touch of mystery. I love how the author is able to consistently write such engaging characters that drive the storyline. The narration was great as well!

Entertaining!

Excellent narration. Having read most of Mrs. Heyer’s books a long time ago, I am gaining a fresh perspective on her talent and wordsmith ability. Always an engaging story and characters!

Charming

I am beginning to really enjoy and appreciate Heyer’s more staid books. Love the gradual development of the relationship between the two main characters. Very well narrated. Sighs….

The Quiet Gentleman

The use of language is superb! Heyer is at her most humorous, tongue in cheek, best! The characters are well developed and set beautifully in their time period. The romance is tastefully developed between St. Erth and his love, set against the background of a developing murder mystery. Excellent! When I was younger I read this with far less appreciation. but a few decades later and with far more life experience I truly appreciate it. I highly recommend this masterly tale to any reader who appreciates romantic historical fiction tastefully and artfully written by Ms. Heyer.

unintelligible to wake the neighbors

yoyo style of volume amplitude makes what should be a ten to an extremely irritating three- the story which I have read many times is romance action mystery adventure- I wish pelican would even out volume aptitude-mumble mumble yell yellYEEELL mumble mumble yell yell- I am not exagerating- sometimes it does that in the same sentence- over half penguins heyer offerings are like that-i wish they would even it out-- they would get more sales and fewer returns

not one of my favorites

the story is pretty standard. mostly family politics. Lacks much of any hits of interesting mystery. it's okay if you just want to kill the time with the visions of balls and family entry.
