Publisher's summary

Foreword by Academy Award-winner Mahershala Ali

An internationally renowned and highly sought-after Hollywood voice coach shares proven practices to help anyone utilize the often-untapped power of their own authentic voice.

From a toddler's first words to professional public speaking, from a marriage proposal to asking for a raise, our voice is our most crucial instrument of expression. The world judges us by our voice. And yet there has been no authoritative guide to mastering its full capacity and expressing our true selves in every aspect of life, from relationships and family to work. Until now.

As one of the nation’s most sought-after vocal coaches, Denise Woods has worked with everyone from Mahershala Ali, Will Smith, and Idris Elba to Kirsten Dunst and Jessica Chastain. In The Power of Voice, for the first time ever, Woods shares the secrets, tips, lessons, and stories that have helped Hollywood’s biggest stars become confident, effective communicators.

Listeners will learn how to:

  • Articulate clearly
  • Gain confidence in any situation
  • Release tension and stress
  • Address speech issues such as upspeak, vocal fry, and nasality
  • Become powerful public speakers
  • Find their truest form of expression

With her unmatched ability to teach vocal mastery in real-world terms, Woods offers a much-needed, proven, practical, and invaluable set of tools that will forever change how we communicate and, ultimately, how we see ourselves and affect others.

Denise hits the nail on the head!

I teach high school seniors and at the end of the year they do an oral presentation in front of their peers. I was excited when the WSJ offered this book as an option. We listened to a significant portion of the book, as well as Mr. Ali's introduction. Having already watched the movie "Green Book" and listening to his elegant diction, they could identify the impact Ms. Woods on his communication. They really liked the emphasis on "tell your story" even in a formal oral presentation. Thanks, Denise!

All one level “monologue”

This maybe a great listen, I just couldn’t take it any longer. Wasted my credit

Disappointed

The audiobook is full of stories. It is like you come to learn power of voice and end up learning the art of story telling. I don't want the stories I just want to learn the power of voice. When we come to a math class the teacher doesn't tell us all his stories how he taught all his previous students before us and what interesting things happened to his students. If you are willing to pay the price for the book remember you will be paying one more price and it is your most valuable possession, your time... I honestly feel regret if only you can imagine this paintful word "regret" in its worst.

Title is deceiving

This book is about future actors getting into acting. It’s not about finding your voice or boundaries at all.

An autobiography, not a useful guidebook.

The description of this book very, very clearly suggests that it is a practical guide to improving one's speech and articulation. It is not. It is essentially "I am a proud African american woman from the projects", followed by 10 hours of humble-bragging.
