Publisher's summary

He was a survivor - a wanderer who traded tales for food and shelter in the dark and savage aftermath of a devastating war.

Fate touches him one chill winter’s day when he borrows the jacket of a long-dead postal worker to protect himself from the cold. The old, worn uniform still has power as a symbol of hope, and with it he begins to weave his greatest tale, of a nation on the road to recovery.

This is the story of a lie that became the most powerful kind of truth. A timeless novel as urgently compelling as War Day or Alas, Babylon, David Brin’s The Postman is the dramatically moving saga of a man who rekindled the spirit of America through the power of a dream, from a modern master of science fiction.

Portentous

Wonderfully written and riveting! Also portentous of what is happening in the US today. A must read.

Enjoyed a story set in Oregon

The story is engaging although quite a lot different than the movie. Obviously the author knew his southern Oregon geography! Even small remote towns are noted accurately.

Good story, movie was better

A really good story, but i found it hard to follow in the last few hours. The movie was a little better.

Builds to an amazing finish

I happen to like the movie but don’t make the mistake of thinking the movie and book are the same.

The plot meanders at first but then it builds and all the pieces come together. Narration was great too!

Much different than the movie but just as good!

As a fan of the Fallout series of games, I love post apocalyptic stories that bring something unique. The Postman movie did that and I really enjoyed it so I was hesitant about the book. Turns out, the book is much different but just as entertaining. This is an overlooked gem in the post-apocalyptic genre. Give it a listen.

Not a Hollywood script

This book was not what I expected, and that is good, because we need a new story for the future

What an unexpected delight

The delight of the story comes from the delusion of the protagonist and watching it unfold was nothing short of wonderful. I think I’m going to go write a letter.

Exceptional story

I really loved this story. This is different from the movie but it was also great to read the authors original intentions. The movie has long been one of my favorites and I have watched it several times. This has inspired me to watch it again which I'm about to go do.

A great story - I am happy I finally read it.

I could not stop listening to this story, and can't believe it hasn't been turned into a series nor that the movie has not been remade yet.

Well read and well written, it is surprisingly relevant today. It was easy to follow, but still captivating and thought provoking. Sadly as usual it's not hard to imagine why the reviews are skewed between mostly such positives, but a surprising number of negatives. Too bad we can't block reviewers, so that they are also not counted in our view of the ratings.

The Postman

Definitely a five .... the story, the narrator, the happy, the sad, the excitement, the danger. The characters and scenery are so vivid. Initially I thought this would turn into another 'Walking Dead" story, but I decided to give it a bit more time. I am so glad I stayed with it. As it turned out it changed into something I couldn't get enough of. HOORAY , David Brin for writing this and HOORAY Kevin Kenerly for your wonderful narration. Thank you
