Publisher's summary

The death of unpopular Herbert Terrell seems accidental - although this expert mountain climber plunged off a mere hill in Czechoslovakia. The saddest part of the tragedy is that no one cares, not his ex-wife, his step daughter Tossa at Oxford, or his colleagues at a British scientific institute...until Tossa is shocked into emotion by a mysterious note suggesting Terrell was murdered.

Inspector Felse's college-age son, Dominic, is spending his first summer abroad and has fallen in love with Tossa, a woman who appears to be arranging their travel itinerary for her own inscrutable purposes.

As Always, Great Ellis Peters!

Ellis Peters never fails to delight! Although Sergeant Felles and Bunny don’t figure in this book, Dominick is their embodiment! Peters is an artist, giving us a wonderful story with deeply satisfying descriptions of every detail. The fact that it is a wonderfully complex mystery, is almost secondary. Peters never disappoints!

Master author and master narrator

Truly a find. Ellis Peters is a genius in the way he crafts language to cast an image in ones mind. Simon Prebble is a always spot on!

Ellis Peter’s is Wonderful; Simon Prebble Is Her Messenger Angel

Others have been called gifted in describing music. Ellis Peters leaves them all in the dust, Even Virginia Woolf. Even me. I don’t care as much about Dominic Felse as about his father, Chief Inspector George Felse, and for a while I really hated Tossa: secretive, manipulative, and sometimes stupid. But Peters always gives us serious issues at stake and gives us good people to care about. Simon Prebble is her perfect narrator. I wish a thousand times they had recorded more Inspector Felse—there is so much more—with Simon Prebble. What Jeremy Brett was to Sherlock Holmes, what Joan Hickson was to Miss Marple, what David Suchet is to Poirot, so Simon Prebble is to inspector Felse. And Felse deserved many more recordings. You can’t know what you’ve done for me, Mr. Prebble.

Smart and atmospheric

Nice details and setting about Slovakia and post Cold War. Interesting plot, good pace. Wry humor about British civil servants and diplomats. Excellent narrator.
