Publisher's summary

Stanford-trained psychiatrist David Carreon, MD, reveals what it takes to move from nagging disappointment, dissatisfaction, or depression to a life of thriving. One of the pioneers of the use of an intense form of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in severely depressed patients, Dr. Carreon was astonished by how quickly and dramatically most of them recovered. But he also saw very clearly that just eliminating the symptoms of depression wasn't enough. To live a truly fulfilling life, his patients needed to leave old habits behind and embrace the patterns of flourishing. In The Opposite of Depression, he draws on insights from his clinical experience, the latest research, and his Christian faith to point listeners to principles and practices that promote thriving in mind, body, and soul. Each chapter offers practical steps listeners can take to start moving in the direction of greater satisfaction, fulfillment, and purpose.

Uplifting and Encouraging

"The Opposite of Depression," David M. Carreon, M.D., explores the complex terrain of depression with the keen eye of a clinician seasoned in the psychological battles facing modern humanity. Carreon’s book stands out for its compassionate approach to understanding the depressed state of mankind, deeply probing the reasons behind the increasing prevalence of this debilitating condition. Carreon masterfully interlaces the latest research with poignant patient stories to paint a vivid picture of depression's impact. His insights into the psychological, biological, and societal factors that contribute to depression are presented with clarity, making the science accessible and engaging. More importantly, Carreon's work is imbued with a sense of hope, a crucial element often missing in clinical discussions about mental health.

The core of the book is dedicated to offering actionable recommendations for individuals to not only manage but flourish beyond the confines of depression. These recommendations are grounded in evidence-based practices, including mindfulness, cognitive behavioral techniques, and lifestyle adjustments, such as diet and exercise. What makes Carreon’s advice compelling is his holistic approach, which considers the whole person rather than just treating symptoms.

Furthermore, "The Opposite of Depression" doesn't shy away from discussing the systemic changes needed to better support individuals suffering from depression. Carreon advocates for broader societal understanding and stronger community networks, highlighting how these can significantly alleviate the isolation that often accompanies depression.

In conclusion, David M. Carreon's "The Opposite of Depression" is a profound and uplifting book. It not only deepens our understanding of depression but also equips readers with the tools to reclaim joy and meaning in their lives. This book is a must-read for anyone touched by depression, whether personally or in a caregiver role, offering a beacon of hope and a roadmap to a brighter, healthier flourishing life.

Wonderfully Easy To Read And Understand

Many self help books are dry and clinical in style. The Opposite of Depression, written by Dr. David Carreon, is refreshingly, easily understood by the layman. Dr. Carreon’s work in the field of psychiatry is extensive and comprehensive enough to give the reader confidence in his diagnoses and in his suggestions for self help ideas and for possible treatments. This is a five star book. I hope Dr. Carreon will be invited to speak at a multitude of events and on a plethora of social media platforms so as to bring hope to those who might suffer from depression.
