Pisa, May 1364.

Sir William Gold is looking forward to a lucrative career as a hired sword in the endless warring between Italy's city states. But when a message comes from the Grand Master of the Hospitaliers, William is forced to leave his dreams of fame and fortune behind him.

The Hospitaliers are gathering men for a crusade, and Sir William must join them. Yet before they set out for the holy land, the knights face deadly adversaries much closer to home....

In the twisting politics of Italy, no one can be trusted. And there are those who would be pleased to see the crusade fail....

Great second volume

Really enjoyed this second volume, the personal toll such a life would take is well told without becoming burdensome.

Always very good!

Very good book. Love, war, and chivalry. The basics perfectly and uniquely done, once again.

The first one was so good..,

But the second book is dull by comparison. I guess I enjoyed it well enough, but the story did not engage me like the first. Rather slow paced.

Another great tales well told.

Cameron has a knack for great detail but not too much. It weaves a fine tapestry. William Gold is heroic but has the advantage of humility and maturity to curb his bravado with hindsight and introspection.

Great book!

Narration is truly excellent, and a compelling story. Perhaps not quite as good as book 1, still very good.
