When a baby escapes a murderer intent on killing the entire family, who would have thought it would find safety and security in the local graveyard?
Brought up by the resident ghosts, ghouls and spectres, Bod has an eccentric childhood learning about life from the dead. But for Bod there is also the danger of the murderer still looking for him - after all, he is the last remaining member of the family.
A stunningly original novel deftly constructed over eight chapters, featuring every second year of Bod's life, from babyhood to adolescence. Will Bod survive to be a man?

"Thrilling, elegant and joyously macabre. You will love it to death." (Holly Black, author of The Spiderwick Chronicles)
Marketer. The Engineer-MBA stereotype. Sports-fiction writer. Poor reader of text. Thus at Audible. God Bless.
Cannot comment. This is the first and only book by Neil Gaiman that I have read via audio, and absolutely loved it. Just like I loved the previous Gaiman reads - which I read on print.
The book it is inspired by, Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling. Kind of a coming-of-age novel, with dollops of fantasy.
Also, the fantasy / magic novels which follow the template somewhat: the Harry Potter series etc.
Also other coming-of-age stories:
To Kill a Mockingbird.
Pather Panchali, a Bengali novel by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (from which a very famous movie was made later by Satyajit Ray)
Nothing that i disliked.
Miss Lupescu's rescue of Bod from the ghouls.
Bod's leaving the graveyard, right at the end.
This was a great little book. It was read well, the story was entertaining and interesting and unusual. I really enjoyed it even though it is a children's book.
This must be my favorite audio book to date. This story would have been good read by any one, but Neil Gaiman added to it even more
I tell every one who doesn’t know Coraline, that it is very ‘Nightmare before Christmas’ / ‘Corpses bride’
I enjoyed the magic of the grave yard –Bod’s adventures with all the dead and their stories and the secrets of the grave yard he explored.
This is really a good book, definitely worth a credit. The author reading it made the audio book even better, because who could better understand precisely the mood of each scene and the personalities of the characters. Different people like different kinds of books, but I can’t imagine that any one would listen to this and regret it.
I have always loved Neil Gaiman and to listen to him read his own words is just wonderful.
Its a fantastic book. It blends dark whimsy, historical trivia and humour as only Gaiman can and the result was me sometimes sitting in my car long after I had arrived at my destination to listen to a little bit more of the story.
Nicely tall and intelligently open-minded
I recommended especially to those that as an adult enjoy a good teenage novel.
I liked every character even the bad guys. The story unfolds through the characters so there is one for everyone to like or dislike
No but I will now
I've listened to this audiobook several times. I love the layers of complexity that are revealed through repeated listens. Definitely one of my favourites.
I found the plays on words amusing.
Neil Gainman seems to be a favourite with us Aussies, and why not, I could listen to his voice forever and his marvellous mind always entertains with totally different stories. To have a tale set in a graveyard with an ophaned baby is basically weird! But in the hands of a master storyteller it keeps one enthralled until the end. Totally recommended.
Yes, I enjoyed the story. It was a new spin on the supernatural genre and was subtle in its approach.
It's quirkyness and humour.
It kept me enthralled, waiting to find out what will happen next.
How to choose??? All the characters were well done. Maybe the guardian.
I just loved this book and will be looking for more by this author. Excellently read too - very entertaining.
This is the kind of book you don't want to finish. Endearing yet sharp characters, great moments, and the delicious feeling of getting mixed up in a whole new setting, as the dead become allies and friends. Wonderful book. Very well read, too.
"Another 5 star book by Gaimen"
Gaiman's quirky imagination, evocative writing and great narration made this a brilliant listen. His characters are engaging and the music score really pulls the whole thing together. I loved how each chapter was a separate story following Bod from a young boy to a teenager.
This is more reminiscent of Gaiman's Good Omens (which he co-wrote with the amazing Terry Pratchett) or The Ocean At The End Of The Lane. It is a children's book but I personally prefer his books for younger readers as they can equally be enjoyed by adults but have less darkness and more humor than more well known books like Neverwhere.
Gaiman is a really good narrator. He was shortlisted for Audible's narrator of the year in 2013 and this book will show you why. His understanding of the story and ability to give voice to his characters, brings the whole thing to life exactly as the author intend. Combined with the music score, Gaiman's narration really creates an atmospheric performance.
There are both funny and sad scenes in this book but despite some very bad things happening to the hero there is a lot more cheer and optimism than sadness in it, which is how I prefer a book.
This is one of those books I just couldn't stop listening too, it's beautifully narrated and imagined and I will defiantly be listening to it again.
"fab book neil, but why the loud music???"
no!! the music separating the chapters/parts is unbearable, too loud and too intrusive. shame because neil reads so well.
absolutely! when you read like him you don't need to put on funny voices.
Neil Gaiman's narration really makes his books so good. A great story unlike anything I have listened to, great characters and once again beautifully read.
"Interesting and clever"
Dark, funny, imaginative.
As he wrote the book, you hear it exactly how it was meant to come across.
Baring in mind that this is a children's book and therefore can lack in depth/description it is still a brilliantly imaginative and at times spooky book.
"Loved this! And I never give 5 star but I have now"
Yes, the experience was thoroughly enjoyable and absorbing. Neil Gaiman's reading of his story was the most absorbing I have ever listened to. I just wish the story continued in another book.
Would highly recommend you listen to this, what more is there to say
Always great when the author reads the book as you really get to hear how it was meant to sound when it was written.
"Another corker from Gaiman"
When reading/listening to this book it is important to know it is covered in Gaimans usual sprinkling gothic creepiness.
That is not a criticism, as I find his eerie style very appealing and enthralling, but be warned there are unusual characters and uneasy situations now and again.
That said there is a lot to like about this book. It has some brilliant complicated characters, some lovely quirky dialogue and an overarching story that is gripping. Each chapter has its own theme which keeps the story moving as the characters enter in and out of each, and even the supporting cast are interesting and used to perfection.
Gaiman himself narrating the book is perfect as he knows the characters inside out and reads it very well becoming each of his characters.
Even though I am in my twenties and not the target audience I enjoyed this book thoroughly, found it clever, the fantasy elements different from the usual and used to perfection, and would recommend it to anyone.
"for all ages"
This story works for adults and children with excellent narration from the author. Only hope there is a sequel as I would like to find out what happens to Bod in the future.
"Really original and gentle book"
I've never read any Neil Gaiman before and I think I struck lucky. I loved this book, innocent and wise at the same time.
"A brilliantly read and crafted tale."
Neil Gaiman effortlessly translates his brilliant imagination into this wonderful tale of an ophaned boy who grows up in a graveyard and experiences all sorts of amazing adventures. Not only does he write it, but he reads it too! Listen and experience the screech of the Nightgaunt and the comic expostulations of a Cockney ghoul! You'll be entertained and educated too cos' he's obviously done his research well and you'll benefit from that!
