Publisher's summary

An NPR best book of the year and recommended by Oprah Daily, Good Housekeeping, Zibby Mag, Lit Hub, Electric Lit, and Katie Couric Media!

"A summer read with bite.”—NPR

Disgraced model-writer Bianca Bridge can’t stand hotshot makeup maven Obadiah Cortland. And he lets her know the feeling is mutual. But when working together is their last resort, they must navigate scandal, revenge, and unexpected affection to unlock the beauty that’s found in redemption.

Getting a second chance is a beautiful thing…

Bianca Bridge is like an eyeshadow palette. She's a vibrant kaleidoscope of big personality and even bigger dreams, with a tendency towards messiness and fallout. Case in point: losing her job and ruining her reputation by having an affair with a married government official.

Her fiercely confident and tyrannical new boss Obadiah Cortland—a legend in Trinidad's beauty scene—is like a statement red lipstick. Dubbed the God of Good Looks, Obadiah has perfected his hotshot façade after years of navigating the island's rigid class barriers. He knows as well as Bianca that the tiniest smudge can ruin your image.

When Bianca's ex threatens both their futures, they must find a way to work together to save everything they care about. But as they put their differences aside, will they find they actually bring out the best in each other?

Vivid and engaging

I kept wishing I could see these characters, have makeup like it was described and eat the food. Everything was brought to life so vividly.

The narration was fresh and authentic

The God of Good Looks is a wickedly deceptive and delicious take on Trinidadian society. Deceptive because it feels like a layered love story but morphs into a work that offers biting social commentary, and touches topics oft considered taboo in Caribbean society. A must-read and an instant classic.

I LOVED IT

It was entirely by chance that i came across this book and i loved it! I am originally from Trinidad but we moved to the US when i was nine. Not only was the story line enjoyable, it also provided information about Trinidad and my culture that i was not aware of - finally, i truly enjoyed hearing a book were the narrators had a Trinidad accent. Bravo to the author and the narrators!!

The love of inner beauty

I am glad I listen to this book rather than read it. I enjoyed the voice and tone of the book and felt at familiar times not alone when it comes to be having the feeling of being alone.

Great story, fantastic narration

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters are interesting and layered. I always enjoy "unlikeable" characters, so Obediah was fun to get to know, especially as the layers peeled back. Revealing parts of him and his past was a great choice. The Behind the Book section was especially interesting to me as a writer, and a testament to the importance of workshopping and getting beta readers. I was very pleased to hear Trinidadian people narrating. It makes a big difference having the authentic cadence and style of speech.

An Unexpected Gift

I was invested from the first line! One of those novels that you devour but regret having read so quickly because that means you are almost done,I'm looking forward to more from this author!

Characters, Story and Food-the best!

The narrator was outstanding and the story was unique in every way. I loved the spectrum of approaches to beauty and the insight into Trinidadian culture.

Lovely listen

This was a wonderful book which was believable and a realistic portrayal of the aspects of Trinidadian society it seeks to portray.
