Publisher's summary

That old door had been standing there for many years. Just a solid timber door and a frame. Just a door...an ordinary door....

“Are you sure there’s nothing to worry about? Nothing to be afraid of? Are you absolutely certain that it is just a door, and nothing more?”

"Just a solitary door."

After a school for boys had burned down on the edge of Hampstead Heath, nothing was left but a solitary door. Standing there alone for more than one hundred years, it was an intriguing sight, As a boy, David Ashby had been warned against getting close to it by his grandfather who said there was danger lurking near the door. Now a man, out walking, David again sees the door and remembering but ignoring the warnings as nonsense, he knocks on the door and goes through.

Simply but effectively written, this short (just over two hour) story is perhaps predictable but still a good read. A little more early character development of David would have made.him more negating, combined with a little less of the grandfather's warnings which at times became, for this reader, an unnecessary intrusion, would have increased the the solidity of the story. Read by James Thomson, in a paced home counties English voice, the story was well articulated and modulated, even if it did lack in emotional content. That was left entirely to the reader's imagination.

My thanks to the rights holder of The Door, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. This was very different from the author's usual writings, which I have very much enjoyed in the past, but good nonetheless. Recommended

The Door

This was a good story. There could have been more storyline instead of grandpa just yelling'don't go near it.I liked it though. James Thomson was a fine narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

though provoking

This was intriguing. Surprise time travel. It made me pause to think what I would do if presented with this door. Not sure I'd have the guts to go through, especially after listening to this. Food for thought. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a great job bringing it to life.

Things Better Left Alone

There are things in this world that can't be understood and forces better left alone. A mysterious door stands alone in a forest that has survived many years and seasons where rumors are abound about the danger that surrounds it. No one knows conclusively what the was attached to or where it came from. Could it be a portal to know where or a portal to another dimension. David finds out when he tempts fate. I absolutely loved this short well written novella and the characters. James Thomsom brought the story to life by bringing me into the story with his amazing narration. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense, mystery and fiction. I am voluntarily leaving this review of my own free will.

Really enjoyed it

First hour I wasn't sure if I liked it. Then it all fell into place. And the authors natural style and talent really kicked in. It is written in the style of the 1890s.Reminiscent of Conan Doyle..
Another great story from John.

The door

I found the door very interesting and it ends to soon.

As I listen to the story I found myself wondering why did the door pick David. Was it that it wanted to take any survivors of the fire. Was there something else at play.

I feel that this story has a lot of potential. It could be easily extended. Drawing people in why the door is taking people back.

It could play out that either eventually a person would save everybody or eventually everyone who survived that night line with die.

There is no corse Language in it, or sex scenes. Violence is low (the fire) it does not go into great details. And because of this I feel that this story could be read by young adults as well.

Narrator James Thomson again does a good job bringing the characters alive with their own individual voices.

Good Read

The Door was a good read by John Holt. There has been a solid timber door and frame that has been standing in the same place for many years. Many people have questioned “Are you sure there’s nothing to worry about? Nothing to be afraid of? Are you absolutely certain that it is just a door, and nothing more?” I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

Insipid… Flat… One Note… Juvenile

I was looking forward to a good little shivery short story… This was not it..
Poorly written, no depth, stilted narrator that lacked an ounce of gravitas…
