Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Orphan's Tale.

How have I been lucky enough to come here, to be alive, when so many others are not? I should have died. But I am here.

It's 1945. Surviving the brutality of a Nazi prison camp, Marta Nederman is lucky to have escaped with her life. Recovering from the horror, she meets Paul, an American soldier who gives her hope of a happier future. But their plans to meet in London are dashed when Paul's plane crashes.

Devastated and pregnant, Marta marries Simon, a caring British diplomat, and glimpses the joy that home and family can bring. But her happiness is threatened when she learns of a Communist spy in British intelligence and that the one person who can expose the traitor is connected to her past.

Great book

I’ve read a couple books by Pam Jenoff and was pleased when this one became my book club’s suggestion.
I enjoyed it very much. The narrator was perfect

Good twists

On the whole this book has a good story but the female lead is naive and frustratingly weak at some instances. It follows similar lines and follows several themes of the previous book “the Kommandant’s girl”

Good book. Definitely worth the credit

Pretty good book. It’s not a “wow factor “ as the description seemed to dictate. It was kind of predictable, but I love how Saskia Maarleveld brings life to the characters. I would recommend!

Enjoyed it!

There may have been some parts of this story that defied belief, but I didn’t care. It drew me in and I listened until late at night, when I should have asleep. I found myself somewhat distracted by the amount of times the author used the word “hesitated “ but al in all, very much enjoyed this book. It’s a great quarantine listen. The narration by Saskia Maarleveld is truly excellent.

Read-critical for preservation of freedom

This work of fiction is based on a very possibly true sequence of events as a result of communism. The infiltration, lies, deception, are rampant in emerging communist countries.

As so masterfully woven into this story is that American ideals “freedom “ saved Europe and England.

Our country is not perfect but the role America plays is to be respected and preserved.
