Published in 1922, Fitzgerald's second novel chronicles the relationship of Anthony Patch, Harvard-educated, aspiring aesthete, and his beautiful wife, Gloria, as they await to inherit his grandfather's fortune. A devastating satire of the nouveaux rich and New York's nightlife, of reckless ambition and squandered talent, it is also a shattering portrait of a marriage fueled by alcohol and wasted by wealth. The Beautiful and Damned, Fitzgerald wrote to Zelda in 1930, "was all true."

Werner Herzog was born in September 1942 in Munich, Germany, at a turning point in the Second World War. Soon Germany would be defeated and a new world would have to be made out the rubble and horrors of the war. Fleeing the Allied bombing raids, Herzog’s mother took him and his older brother to a remote, rustic part of Bavaria where he would spend much of his childhood hungry, without running water, in deep poverty. It was there, as the new postwar order was emerging, that one of the most visionary filmmakers of the next seven decades was formed.

Through Jim Burden's endearing, smitten voice, we revisit the remarkable vicissitudes of immigrant life in the Nebraska heartland, with all its insistent bonds. Guiding the way are some of literature's most beguiling characters: the Russian brothers plagued by memories of a fateful sleigh ride, Antonia's desperately homesick father and self-indulgent mother, and the coy Lena Lingard. Holding the pastoral society's heart, of course, is the bewitching, free-spirited Antonia.

Story
The Natural, Bernard Malamud's first novel, published in 1952, is also the first - and some would say still the best - novel ever written about baseball. In it Malamud, usually appreciated for his unerring portrayals of postwar Jewish life, took on very different material - the story of a superbly gifted "natural" at play in the fields of the old daylight baseball era - and invested it with the hardscrabble poetry, at once grand and altogether believable, that runs through all his best work.

Story
Evelyn Waugh's most celebrated work is a memory drama about the intense entanglement of the narrator, Charles Ryder, with a great Anglo-Catholic family. Written during World War II, the story mourns the passing of the aristocratic world Waugh knew in his youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities; in so doing it also provides a profound study of the conflict between the demands of religion and the desires of the flesh.

Editorial reviews
In "The Diamond as big as the Ritz", the always-elegant writer F. Scott Fitzgerald writes an imaginative account of an entrepreneurial family who come to possess a ridiculously large diamond. The story is about American money, history, and racial politics. Jim Roberts narrates the audiobook in a careful, no-frills manner that allows the listener space to really absorb Fitzgerald's pristine prose, and to find buried some rather profound discoveries about human nature.

After much study of the human mind, he devises an experiment that involves minor brain surgery. Ghost stories date back centuries, but those written in the Victorian era have a unique atmosphere and dark beauty. Michael Sims, whose previous Victorian collections Dracula’s Guest (vampires) and The Dead Witness (detectives) have been widely praised, has gathered twelve of the best stories about humanity’s oldest supernatural obsession. The Phantom Coach includes tales by a surprising and often legendary cast, including Charles Dickens, Margaret Oliphant, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, and Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as lost gems by forgotten masters such as Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and W. F. Harvey. Amelia B. Edwards’s chilling story gives the collection its title, while Ambrose Bierce ("The Moonlit Road"), Elizabeth Gaskell ("The Old Nurse’s Story"), and W. W. Jacobs ("The Monkey’s Paw") will turn you white as a sheet. With a skillful introduction to the genre and notes on each story by Sims, The Phantom Coach is a spectacular collection of ghostly Victorian thrills.

Although it is little known in this country, The Belly of Paris is considered one of Émile Zola’s best novels. Set in the newly built food markets of Paris, it is a story of wealth and poverty set against a sumptuous banquet of food and commerce. Having just escaped from prison after being wrongfully accused, young Florent arrives at Paris’ food market, Les Halles, half starved, surrounded by all he can’t have, and indignant at his world, which he now knows to be unjust. He finds that the city’s working classes have been displaced to make way for bigger streets and bourgeois living quarters, so he settles in with his brother’s family.

Eighteen-year-old Charity Royall lives in the small town of North Dormer, ignorant of desire until the arrival of architect Lucius Harney. Like the succulent summer landscape in the Berkshires around them, Charity's romance is lush and picturesque, but its consequences are harsh and real.

Story
Published in 1922, Fitzgerald's second novel chronicles the relationship of Anthony Patch, Harvard-educated, aspiring aesthete, and his beautiful wife, Gloria, as they await to inherit his grandfather's fortune. A devastating satire of the nouveaux rich and New York's nightlife, of reckless ambition and squandered talent, it is also a shattering portrait of a marriage fueled by alcohol and wasted by wealth. The Beautiful and Damned, Fitzgerald wrote to Zelda in 1930, "was all true."

The 6 wonderful, romantic tales in this collection are reminiscent of ancient Oriental and German fairy tales. The selections, "The Poet," "The Flute Dream," "The Dwarf," "Faldum," "Ziegler," and "Dream of the Gods" were hand-picked by the narrator, legendary folk and rock musician Donovan.

Just who is he? And what does he hope to achieve? Evolving from first person to third person, and then into a diary, A Hero of Our Time takes on a variety of forms to interrogate Pechorin's cryptic character and his unusual philosophy, providing breathtaking descriptions of the Caucasus along the way.

FSF out west
A parable of greed and aristocracy, and their comeuppance, set in the wilds of Montana. Fitzgerald is in full fantasy mode, and a bit out of his element out west. His way with words, as usual, is amazing. An enjoyable read -
or listen. Especially recommended for fans of Kurt Vonnegut, who perhaps read this during his formative years.

Very Imaginative Story
Would you listen to The Diamond as Big as the Ritz again? Why?
No....it was good but once was enough.
Who was your favorite character and why?
All of them
What does Jim Roberts bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I made sure I listened to the sample before getting this because a couple of people really did not like the reader but...very few people agreed with them so, I did the logical thing..listened and decided for myself. Sample sounded fine so I got it and and really enjoyed the reading. No idea why those people had such a problem with it..to each his own, I guess.
Any additional comments?
This was a very unusual story for Fitzgerald and he showed he not only can write, but that he has a fantastic imagination. Great story.

Horrible narration
What disappointed you about The Diamond as Big as the Ritz?
I am fairly new to Audible. I have purchased 18 titles and this is the only one that I have been unable to finish. I ended my satisfying F.Scott Fitzgerald binge with this sour taste. Oh well, I'll always have Gatsby.
Would you ever listen to anything by F. Scott Fitzgerald again?
I have purchased and enjoyed, "The Great Gatsby", "Tender is the Night", "This Side of Paradise", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Bernice Bobs Her Hair". I think I'm done with F. Scott for awhile.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jim Roberts?
Anyone.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. The book was inexpensive so I wasn't too upset.

How to ruin a classic
One of the great short stories read like a high school textbook to pre-schoolers. The story is 5 stars, maybe 7, but the reading...well, it was only the quality of the story that kept me from tossing the CD out the window. The reading was like a car on bad gas, sputtering, struggling, saved only by the unstoppable momentum of the story. Read it yourself and avoid this.
