Publisher's summary

1787. Captain Edward Brazier is on a mission: recently paid off from his frigate and comfortably off with prize money, he is headed to Deal to propose marriage to the young and lovely widow Betsey Langridge. He must navigate the bustle of the town's narrow streets that are busy with legal, illicit and depraved business flowing from and around the ships at dock. But all does not go well; between Betsey's brother and guardian, Henry Tulkington, prohibiting the match and Brazier marked out for trouble by a local smuggling gang, his plans are in disarray. And when it slowly emerges that there may have been a decades-old injustice closer to home, Brazier is caught up in more than he'd bargained for.

Slow burn with no resolution? Oof.

A captain without a ship, fighting for a pre existing relationship that is never explained, tedious tension that never releases, a villain that is neither a threat nor a danger, and a story that drags on for hour after hour without progress to culminate.... in a cliffhanger. Utterly frustrating and painful.

Not up to his usual works

I was disappointed in this series and Thankful he only wrote two books. I listened to the audio version and to say it dragged along would be an understatement. The so called hero fell flat and took an entire 11 hours to court the girl only to lose her in the end. And then the book ends right there!
The second book is turning out to be more of the same. His other books are way better.

Unsatisfactory ending

An average storyline completely unsatisfactory due to the “ending” which was nothing more than an old time cliffhanger as when the heroine is tied to the railroad tracks awaiting the arrival of the hero or the Union Pacific. This boy k is nothing more than the first chapter in an ongoing serial.
