Nikolai Gogol was one of the first to use the technique of the grotesque. According to Viktor Shklovsky, Gogol's strange style of writing resembles the "ostranenie" technique of defamiliarization. His early works, such as Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, were influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing, Ukrainian culture and folklore. His later writing satirised political corruption in the Russian Empire (The Government Inspector, Dead Souls).

Struggled with the narration
Enjoyable stories with horribly difficult names…which, one would hope the narrator would pronounce more smoothly/better than I could reading it myself… the editing was also chopping with the voice sounding abruptly different and as though a certain words/phrases were
inserted later, as an afterthought. You listen to be carried away into a book…not distracted by diction, pronunciation and arduous(often seemingly purposely pompous sounding) timbre.

I had heard several of these stories previously and enjoyed this collection. Not War and Peace greatness but Comedy is hard!

Very good stories, very bad narration
Gogol’s stories are, of course, among the best ever written. The narrator ruins the experience, though. Buy the hard copy and read it that way.
