Editorial reviews

The Christmas Angel is a wonderful complement to the Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. Bitter protagonist Miss Terry discards the toys of her childhood in front of her own home, then watches what occurs. Each event reconfirms for her the absence of the Christmas spirit, at least until the angel that topped the Christmas trees of her youth corrects her misunderstanding. Narrator Leslie Belaire sounds far younger than Miss Terry. She is wise enough to not act out Miss Terry’s dialogue in an elderly style. Belaire’s crisp and feminine voice shares the close third-person narrative with the listener. She sounds like a young neighbor who is seeing the story unfold and is reporting it in simple, natural language.

Publisher's summary

Disagreeable old Miss Terry spends her Christmas Eve getting rid of toys from her childhood toy box. One by one she tosses them onto the sidewalk in front of her house, then secretly watches the little scenes that occur, which seem to confirm her belief that true Christmas spirit does not exist. Then the angel from her childhood Christmas tree appears to show Miss Terry that she has not yet witnessed the final act of each of those little dramas.

Living Age magazine in 1910 observed of The Christmas Angel, "Not since Charles Dickens laid down his pen forever has there been a prettier Christmas story written, one more full of the real spirit of Christmas or conveying a more seasonable lesson."

Creative

The story is creative and a bit cheesy. It’s nice to hear an old story.

A weak copy of Dickens

It's a sweet story, but it seemed like the author intentionally modeled much of it on "A Christmas Carol" without that classic's humor, turn of phrase, or depth. I found myself fast forwarding even though it's less than two hours.

Miss Scrooge

This short story, so like the one of Mr. Scrooge (they come in every size, age and gender) is at once sad and sweet. It opens with Miss Terry's maid asking for a few hours off to go and see the Christmas lights in the little village, to which she grudgingly agrees. Then Miss Terry decides to go upstairs to the old toy box that she and her brother shared as children, and stoke the fire with them . . . until she decides upon an experiment. That experience actually puts Miss Terry to the test and what comes to pass is . . . well, quite marvelous. Excellent Christmas listen!

The Spirit of Christmas

Wonderful story embodied in a fable that tugs at the heartstrings. The characters could be people we know!
