excellent story over-all

excellent story over-all, with mild inaccuracies in regards to the religion practiced by Ela. Mass was not said at the canonical hours (Matins, Lauds, Prime ect) those hours had/have specific prayers assigned to them quite distinct from the Mass. Likewise, Ela, having been educated, would have known that purgatory is a temporary place (not eternal) for the souls of the saved to complete the cleansing of temporal punishment of sins (as opposed to the eternal punishment of damnation). Purgatory will end when the world ends.
The (good) characters are likable, and have depth, as do the wicked characters. The plot is believable, and the details, for the most part keep the story in the middle ages.

Wonderful series!

Madeleine Brolly is the perfect narrator for this wonderful series set in the early middle ages and featuring a protagonist with a rather modern feminist perspective. Ela is feisty, courageous and resourceful. The other characters are well developed. l look forward to seeing more of her titles released as audiobooks.

historically accurate feminist story

Ela is great. The narrator is good too. This is an all around good book.

Wonderful series

I have been enjoying this entire series of Ela of Salisbury. The mysteries are well thought out and the characters are well rounded. I also enjoy the narrator whose voice is perfect for the series.

Empowering women!

I absolutely loved this historical series. Well written and produced, there didn’t seem to be a false note in any of it. I hope this series continues.

Braving a path denied to women

Excellent and engaging story, about a remarkable woman living in medieval times, and braving a path almost completely denied to women. The plot is well-wrought, the atmosphere completely convincing (making me realistically uneasy at times!), and the pace is excellent. I love this series of fact-based historical fiction and mystery. Ela is a wholly intriguing woman of intelligence and thoughtfulness.
