Publisher's summary

While landscaping his backyard, ever-conscientious Paul Prentice discovers an iron door buried in the soil. His childhood friend and perpetual source of mischief, Jay Lightsey, pushes them to explore what's beneath.

When the door slams shut above them, Paul and Jay are trapped in a between-worlds place of Escher-like rooms and horror story monsters, all with a mysterious connection to a command-line, dungeon explorer computer game from the early '80s called The Between.

Paul and Jay find themselves filling roles in a story that seems to play out over and over again. But in this world, where their roles warp their minds, the biggest threat to survival may not be the Ko?Maro, risen from the Between's depths to hunt them; the biggest danger may be each other.

just okay.

this one was a bit tough for me. just couldnt get it in my minds eye. i tried to like it. I hate to say it but i think the narration was the biggest issue. the voices were just off and exaggerated. really liked the concept, just couldnt quite get into it.

More than Role Playing

This book has the feel of a role-playing game where the player assumes different roles, wins artifacts, and such to move on to the next level. The author, Ryan Leslie does an excellent job of setting the stage and then building on it from page one. Every aspect of this story from the dialog, character development, and the unfolding of the plot was well planned and accomplished. One does not need to be a fan of role-playing games or stories to be drawn into this … rather a highly inquisitive person who wants answers.

Leslie’s writing style is unique and highly descriptive. While the first chapter held little promise of excitement or terror, this book quickly moves into a nightmarish world that seems to play on everyone’s weak points or terrors. At one point or another, the listener will feel their heartbeat just a tad bit quicker – whether it is being underground, being lost, seeing one’s nightmare, or any other terrifying fear – there is something for everyone.

The narrator, Geoff Sturtevant, provides an entertaining performance projecting the fear, confusion, and a host of other emotions. He captures and projects the mood of each character and situation well. He speaks clearly and with an energy that keeps the story moving at a quick pace.

The ending threw me a tad bit … I was so NOT expecting it! Well done, Ryan Leslie, well done!

Whether you are into gaming or just enjoy horror, this is a solid listen that should not be missed!

There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook. It was clear, crisp, and well done.

Great story!

Different then you usual litrpg/Portal fantasy. A cool idea with good execution and closure in one book. The narrator isn't my favorite, but he didn't ruin anything either. Definitely worth the credit.

On a scale of 1 to 5 this is a... book.

I am on chapter 24 and still pushing through it, but this book keeps getting in its own way. The story is interesting enough and I wanted to love it but the dialog falls flat in almost every case. I'm not sure what hurts it more, the writing or the performance which is mind numbing at times. I have had to go back and relisten to parts because my mind wanders while listening to the narration.

That being said it is easy for me to say... I'm not a writer and like I said I like the concept. It's a cool story if you can get through some stale dialog.

Good story

I liked the story but I have to admit that at first I had a hard time connecting with the story.
Regarding the narration of the book, the performance of Narrator Geoff Sturtevant is excellent as always, he is a brilliant narrator and writer.

Painful...

I barely finished this book. The sample option exists for books like this. Trite and obnoxious.
