Publisher's summary

Intimate in scale, but grandly outfitted, the luxury cruise liner The Afrikaans hosts no more than 208 pampered guests, among them former FBI contract agent Thomas Prescott. When the ship is overtaken by African pirates who are demanding the US send medical relief to a small Zulu village in South Africa, it is up to Prescott to keep the 400 hostages alive. As the US tries to figure out how to combat the terrorists' plot from the outside, World Health Organization doctor, Gina Brady, undertakes the impossible task of rescuing three children from the secluded village.

As the deadline draws near, Prescott and Brady must race against the clock to discover the truth: Is it medical relief the pirates seek or a $2 billion ransom from one of the richest men in the world? Or could the implications be so profound, and the stakes so high, a war hangs in the balance?

And more laughing...

(Ok, I'm repeating myself on the reviews of the series books 2-4 but same take as the first...) While this book is not always "PC," I have to say I'm literally laughing out loud. I love Thomas' sarcasm, occasional self-deprecation, and his take on events around him. Storyline is good, and narrator does a great job. While certainly outlandish at times, the entertainment value and creative and fun way it's told makes up for it. I've been binging on all of the books in this series and sad to see there's only four.

Another Nick Pirog good book

I gotta say, Thomas is an ass sort of a guy, but love listening to his adventures. Didn’t think I’d like this one as it takes place on a cruise ship, but it was intriguing. There were a couple of slow spots, but overall a nice book about kidnapping, pirates, and a host of interesting, albeit annoying, minor characters. Waiting on the next in series!!!

Intriguing story, bumbling protagonist

I couldn't help but laugh at the author's comment, "I hope [my liberties] didn't make you scream...". They did... but not as much as the bumblings of a supposedly skilled and trained detective. Regardless, the book is entertaining, although LOTS of characters to keep track of... worth your listen. As always, the narrator is superb.

A. Great series

Delighted these were free on audible plus. I’ve found a new very witty mystery author to enjoy.

Mostly love, and a bit of dislove to a favorite of

I love and hate (in a loving way) Pirog's noir narration and dialog. This was a break from Prescott's murder mystery adventures in a good way. Pirog is a very intelligent and quick witted author whose stories are very entertaining and make the time delivering food, pass more quickly. And while I usually enjoy his wit, and verbal wordplay excursions, a bit too often these become detours to the narrative rather than supporting the story. More time building characters would, in my view, make him a much greater writing force.

So a note to Nick's editors: There are times when you need to hang a few sandbags on Mr. Pirog's balloons to prevent him from flying away from his otherwise strong cause.

That said, Nick Pirog is a favorite storyteller of mine and this story is an example why.

Enjoyed the Storyline and Narration

The overall story was great, but the parts of the story mentioning lesbian characters were unnecessary and should not have even been part of the story. The Narration was EXCELLENT!!

What a great story!

I really enjoyed this story. as it went from shockingly scary, to funny scenes and back to horrifying. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep it unexpected. The narration or performance of the book was equally good too. I enjoyed the narrator with the personality that he gave the characters. He doesn't go over the top trying to portray a woman's voice in the way that so many do that is distracting. His way of portraying the different characters only added to them and never took your attention away from the story itself. I especially loved that he pronounced Qatar properly!

I usually read sci fi but I may have to take a break to read more from this author, about this character, or by this narrator. kp /JF

The story and narrator were made for each other

I enjoy the stories Nick writes but could do with fewer sexual scenes. The story is well-written and doesn't need the gratuitous sex, in my opinion.
