Publisher's Summary

In May 1996 the media scrambled to document the gripping story of 16-year-old Mark Pfetzer's expedition to Mount Everest. Not only was he the youngest climber ever to attempt the summit, he also witnessed the tragedy documented in Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, in which eight climbers perished in a sudden storm. Within Reach is Mark's extraordinary account of this experience and of his triumphs over several other challenging peaks. At once triumphant and tragic, this story will be an inspiration to climbers, athletes, and armchair enthusiasts alike.

    "Great Book"

I purchased this book thinking it would just be a "filler" book until I had time to really look at some reviews. When the beginning began "audible kids" I thought, "Great, what did I buy here?", but I have to say this is one of the best books I've ever listened to or read. So well written and the reader was great. An extremely inspiring book. I highly recommend it.

"Within Reach: My Story About Barely Climbing Everest"

This book is just complete boredom. I almost feel asleep while reading half a chapter. Look, I'm a teen and I had to read this for summer homework..but this is the worst book they could've picked. The story is ok, some parts were interesting or funny. Just the overall of this book is weak. It was interesting and amazing to see someone close to my age try to attempt to climb Everest, but in the end the kid doesn't even manage to get up there completely after 3 years of work. My Everest Story to me, is just a plain blank worthless book. I never found it my self in awe or shock or really deep in this book. I first read six chapters then said screw it I'm not reading this because it's so boring. I eventually had to finish for summer reading but it's just not good.

    "Average at best"

This book definitely had it's high points as well as other points that drag along for much too long. What I found most interesting about this book is the maturity level of the author at such a young age. Some of the things he did are just amazing for any human being, much less a 16 year old boy. I would not recommend this book if it is your first mountaineering or high altitude climbing book. If you have already read other books on this subject and are looking for more (like me) to feed your new addiction to climbing books, then download it now.

If you could sum up Within Reach in three words, what would they be?

    A very nice book

What was one of the most memorable moments of Within Reach?

climbing everest in 1996 the year of the great tragedy when 11 people lost their lives.

Have you listened to any of Jeremy Beck’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Absolutey brilliant one of the best narrators. made the story come alive and it just felt like mark Pfetzer himself was telling the story. he really captured the young boy's excitement, ambition, courage and determination

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

matk's determination and sheer hard to accomplish his dream and the unwavering support of his parents.

    Any additional comments?

A true story of a 13 year old boy's dream. Not particularly exciting, no suspense, no heart stopping moments but still it held my attention easily and I really enjoyed it. most people interested in the Himalays and Everest in particular will enjoy it

    "The confidence of youth."

This book tells of the young Mark Pfetzer and his attempts to climb Mount Everest at the age of only 16 years. The description of his preparation and climbs are well written and very informative to the reader. What is most impressive about this book is the self belief and dedication that this young climber has. Its well worth a read.
