Editorial reviews

In this fantasy we meet another strong, young female character with special powers. Daine is gifted in many ways - she's an excellent archer - but her special talent lies in her ability with animals, who seem to listen to her words. Daine earns a job working for Onua, the queen's horse mistress, who is impressed by the girl's powers. Tamora Pierce leads in narrating this exciting tale, which is lovingly detailed and populated by a cast of almost thirty people (including the writer's husband). Once listeners get used to the story switching from the narrator's voice to those of the actors, they will be pleased at its fanciful magic.

Publisher's summary

When Daine comes down from the mountains, she carries with her two things: a dark secret about her own past, and a strangely powerful magic that even she doesn't understand.

Soon Daine has a job working for Onua, the queen's horsemistress, who is astonished at the girl's way with animals. It's almost as if she can speak to them....

Daine and Onua travel to Pirate's Swoop, where Daine finds herself swept into a war that threatens all of Tortall, a war where magic is one of the main weapons.

The wall between the worlds is cracking.

The magical creatures are returning.

Now Daine must master her own magic, and face her own dark memories, if she is to save her new home from destruction.

One of my favorites

When I was a young pre-teen I first found Tamora Pierce's book Wild Magic. It was my first real exposure to a strong female lead, particularly in a fantasy novel. I choose it because of horses on the cover at the time. When I found it as an audio book I was excited at a chance to re-read it (again). I was wary of a full cast audio recording, having not heard one before. The choices they made for the characters were perfect for this series. It feels particularly special that the author is narrating the story as well.

I read this book in middle school then they took them out! I've made it my goal to listen through the whole series!

I loved how the narration was very consistent and the story is always moving forward, at least fast enough to keep using your imagination.

A Lovely performance

I really enjoyed the reading. It was so special being able to hear Tamora narrate the story and have different characters narrated. Sarge's voice and manner was exactly how I imagined it. A lot of fun!!

I love Tamora Pierce. She is why I love to read

the narration was fun to listen to and it's a great story about a strong female protagonist before that was even a buzz word thing

excellent fully acted fantasy!

if you loved storytime when you were little you'll love this book. told from a young girl's point of view and that of her animal friends, she rejoins society and realizes her full potential even though her own self doubt and insecurities trip her along the way.

Enjoyable Listen

Tamora Pierce has been one of my favorite writers since I was very young, I have read three different series by her and have thoroughly enjoyed myself. The audio performance was emphatic and had really great voice actors. I could see how this is most enjoyable for young readers but possibly a bit contrived for older listeners. Overall, still one of my favorite books and the audiobook really engaged me.

good story but

Love the story, always have, but I don't think I care for the multiple voice actors. i might like it better if some places didn't feel so disjointed, like they had no idea what the narrators tone or the others lines were.

Luckily it doesn't rain the story. Still very listenable.
