Daine is gifted in many ways - she's an excellent archer - but her special talent lies in her ability with animals, who seem to listen to her words. Daine earns a job working for Onua, the queen's horse mistress, who is impressed by the girl's powers. Tamora Pierce leads in narrating this exciting tale, which is lovingly detailed and populated by a cast of almost thirty people (including the writer's husband). Once listeners get used to the story switching from the narrator's voice to those of the actors, they will be pleased at its fanciful magic.

When Daine comes down from the mountains, she carries with her two things: a dark secret about her own past, and a strangely powerful magic that even she doesn't understand.

The narrator, Tamora Pierce herself. Her voice is her voice.
What about Tamora Pierce’s performance did you like?
She knew the story inside and out and her untrained voice always brought you back to the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Each of the cased members were able to say their lines to the fullest since their lines where only that of the one character. It was like listening to a play or the old radio programs.

the full cast audio family and Tamora Pierce pull the reader into the magical realm of Tortall in a way that the narrator for the "Song of the Lioness" Quartet couldn't do.

Fun to listen to and imagine again.
I have been a Tamora Pearce fan for a long time. Now I am again. Wonderful characters and an intriguing magic concept - wild magic. I look forward to hearing the next three in the series.

I loved everything and everyone except Daine. I have it on good word that she becomes less naïve as the series moves forward, but it is really cloying in this book to be sure.
Still worth the read though. This is a fun, quick story.

LOVED IT!!
Please please pretty please turn this whole series into a movie! I have read and reread all the books in this series and among the Terrier collection. Tamora Pierce you know how to bring life to your characters. You can't help but get swept up in the storyline.

Didn't know what to expect. This is a great full cast audio. The different voices fit the characters very well. Have listened to this multiple times. I enjoyed the story. The characters are interesting. Each fit the story well. A good story for young and young at heart.
