Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses. Raised among the Wardens - a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe - Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most.
Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever. Then she meets Roth - a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to - especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul. But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne...it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

"Intense, well plotted, and very readable, this title should fly into the hands of every paranormal reader out there." (Booklist)
Armentrout never disappoints! Can't wait to start Stone Cold Touch! The narrator gave each voice a distinction. Love her too!
The narrator was excellent in keeping my attention and speaking for several characters. The story line was VERY interesting about Demons & Wardons(Gargoyles). I loved this story because the main characters grew throughout the story and evolved with the growth of the story line. I have to say though I did cry my eyes out with something that happened in the story - but at least I know it may not be hopeless for what and who I am sad about///this was a great escape and 5 stars for Jennifer the author and the Narrator who read the story!
No, only because I don't prefer to relisten to anything. Once is always enough for me.
Roth was my favorite b/c he was this strong bad boy who really did have a good heart underneath all the demon.
She really brings the characters to life with a great sense of who they are just through her voice. Excellent narrator.
I love Jennifer L Armentrout and how she wrote her story's. this book is awesome!!!!
I loved the uniqueness of the Dark Element universe, the complexity of the different supernatural beings and the fact that these paranormal characters had very moral dilemmas to resolve and very relatable emotional journeys.
I would compare this one favorably to Obsidian, another YA paranormal novel written by this same author. Both have a unique supernatural universe, well developed characters with snarky, sexy and humorous dialogue. Each story drew me in immediately, and I eagerly dove into the sequel for each.
Narrator Saskia Maarleveld added the nuanced emotional tones to each character and did dialect accents that I didn't hear internally when I read the e-book.
Who knew gargoyles and demons could be so badass and sexy?
One of my favorite scenes happens after Layla and Roth team up:‘He moved so fast there was no chance to prepare myself. One second he was there, and then he was curving a hand around the nape of my neck. “You need something,” he said, and when I stared at him, he added, “Your face.”“My face?”“It’s in need of my kisses.”I started to laugh, but his lips found mine as if they were made specifically to do so. My mouth parted on a gasp and the kiss deepened, stealing my breath. His fingers dug into my neck in a firm hold. Time slowed to a crawl and his mouth never left mine, his lips soaking up my responses like he was starved for water. The kiss felt good-really good–and it made think of what we’d done back in his loft. But reality got in the way. When he did pull back the slightest bit, he rested his forehead against mine. Those beautiful eyes were closed. “We need to get out of here and take a crack at the book.”
I loved the story line and thought it was unique. The narrator was great. I would definitely recommend for any YA. I plan on continuing with the next book.
Hi I'm Cara & Im an audioholic. Wow,I feel better now, having admitted this to strangers on the internet. I hope my story can help others ;)
I would probably recommend this book to a friend that enjoys young adult urban fantasy books.
When I began this book, I had a difficult time getting into it. It took me longer than I expected to finally become interested in the story and invested in the characters. I did however, read the next book in the series and it was phenomenal.
