Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy's ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful, lest the Strigoi - the world's fiercest and most dangerous vampires - make Lissa one of them forever.

I was first introduced to audiobooks during a summer when I decided to drive a truck in order to pay for college. Listening to books all day, every day was the only thing that made that job bearable.
It's bittersweet when the first book in an amazing series is the weakest chapter. It's great that each book gets progressively better, exceeding readers' expectations and causing them to fall more in love with the world and characters. However, a lot of people may be turned off by that first book and will never experience how fantastic the story eventually becomes. This almost happened to me with Vampire Academy. I enjoyed the first book, but I didn't love it and I was hestitant when it came to starting the second. Luckily, though, I did.
I gave Vampire Academy 4 stars, but it probably only deserves 3.5. Richelle Mead's story and Stephanie Wolf's performance are adequate, but not spectacular. The world building is weak and the characters do not shine the way they do in later books. I highly recommend this book, but not based on it's own merit. It's requisite reading for the remainder of the series, which should not be missed.
I'm not particularly fond of vampire novels, but I really enjoyed this series. I've read all of them, including Richelle's latest sequel, Bloodlines, and let assure you that none of them was a disappointment. Unlike most whiny, mopey, depressed, sulky and self-pitying protagonists we see so often nowadays, Rose is a genuine and strong heroine you will come to love. She is one of the few characters I feel I could actually relate to. The plots, the characters are much more realistic and relatable than that of Twilight. You can hate vampires and love this book!
I started reading Vampire Academy since 2008, so it was torture having to wait for the release of each book. Since they're all available now, you won't have to experience this kind of unpleasantness. Lucky you! I suggest that you download them all at once, take a week off and indulge yourself in this fascinating world.
I got this audio book a few months ago and have listed to it more than once, at 15 years old and male I'm not exactly the target audience but it was still griping and clever in my opinion, I am excited for the sequel to come out to audio book
When I first got this from audible I listened to it in my car on way up to see my sons. I really enjoyed the book and thought my sons would too. So while I was there I had them download the book on to their iPods and was able to get them into the story. They went and bought the second book and I pre-ordered the 3rd for them. It is such a joy to get two teen age boys (19 and 17) to pick up a book and actually read. Looking forward to more great books from this author.
Vampire Academy is the first in a series, and I fully intend on downloading the rest. I believe it is intended for a YA audience, but at 45 I loved it as well. It was a good story, and the narration (complete with Russian accents and inflections only teenagers can give) was spot on! A nice paranormal story that doesn't gloss over the real problems of adolescence.
I read all 4 of the books, and now am listening to them and have to say, what an excellent experience. You hear things you missed while reading and it brings it to life so much more. What an awesome series, and I'm not even a teen! I would recommend this entire series to anyone. Better than Twilight in my opinion.
Wauw! I just finished listning to this book and I absolutely loved it! It's very well written. It also reminded me of Harry Potter by the way. Also gossiping students locked up in an acient (looking) building, magic powers and big threads to the main characters.
I really like that the girl who's tells the story, Rose, is a non-magic kick-ass guardian who trains every day. I like tough (and ruthless!) heroins. :)
Altough, unlike Harry Potter which I once red to 10 and 12 year olds, I'm not very comfortable with the idea of 13 year old boys reading this stuff too. There is a some talk about sex, so-called 'bloodwhores' and at some point we have some nicely described nudity. Further, we have some dead animals, some dead vampires, very much passing out, not too shocking. It is a story about special teens, but not for teens who aren't at least a little mature.
Oh, the story is also very funny because told by Rose. Your sort of in her head, and her head is pretty amusing.
Anyway, a perfect 10! (in US straigt A?)
(Sorry my English is not flawless,- I'm Dutch)
My 13 year-old son loved this book and has already ordered the sequel from amazon (since it is not on audible), as well as pre-ordered the 3rd book.
It was obviously gripping - he listened to the whole thing in 2 sittings (and would have done it in one if I hadn't made him go to bed). He said the narrator was good as well.
It sounds like an interesting take on vampire-lore.... where vampires are not immortal or evil unless they kill a human. And they have half-human / half-vampire guardians who are trained to protect them. I might give it a listen myself.
FYI - the kinds of books he loves are fantasy: Harry Potters, Artemis Fowls, LotR, Eragon, etc.
Say something about yourself!
This is a good book. I probably would have enjoyed it more if i were younger but it is worth listening to.
I love books and animals.I enjoy all sorts of genres, anything from history to supernatural.
Initially I only got this book because it was cheap. Not knowing if this book would be good or bad I let it sit for 3 months and negleted to listen to it.
One day however, my books ran out and I started listening to this adolesant book...
And WOW. I found this book to be excellent and written so well. The written does a fantastic job at setting a pace and creating these wonderful characters and world that you want to know more about.
The narrator also does a "Class A" job at narrating each character, situation, and emotion.
This is an excellent book and I will definatley be buying more books by this author.
"Vampires and Dhampirs"
A book that is suitable for teens and adults. Dhampir Rose is a Guardian and watches over her close friend Lissa to whom she has a special bond. Lissa is a Moroi, a vampire blue blood (good guy) and also one of the last of her genetic lineage. The Strigoi (bad vampires) whole purpose in life is to attack he Moroi, wgich is why they need the protection of the Dhampir Guardians. Sound complicated? Well it isn't, in fact it is a great read and Richelle Mead has created a fantastic YA series. I highly recommend this author and book
"Definately better than expected!"
I am an avid reader / audiobook listener. I love mystical books with vampires and etc. I have just got to the end of the audio House of Night series : ( which I wasn't happy about.. I love that series! I thought I'd give this a go, although it didn't look as appealing. However, I stand corrected. It is just as good, if you like the House of Night, Vampire Diaries, Twilight Saga and etc I reckon you'll love these too!
"Great introduction to Vampire Accademy Series"
Don't be fooled by thinking this is just another vampire/human teenage angst series. It isn't. Basically there are three types of vampire, one that was born a vampire, one that is half vampire/half human and one that is created a vampire. This series is about the survival of the fittest and the half vampire/human students learning how to guard the safety of the pure vampires they are assigned to. Protecting them from their nemesis, the created vampires. This story enticed me from the beginning and although the heroine, Rose, is a nasty, whiny, spoiled brat, as the story develops, I grew to like her and believe that her main purpose is to protect her best friend and pure vampire, Lissa. That is of course, until she falls for another half vampire/half human who is forbidden and struggles with her own emotions whilst protecting lissa. Great first book and eager to crack on with the next installment.
I've previously read the Vampire Academy books, and the spin-off series, Bloodlines, and I love them! To me, they're the best vampire series of books.
I wasn't sure how much the audiobook would give or take away from my imagination, especially as I've found some audiobooks to be quite boringly read. But I was really happy with this one - including the accents put on for Dimitri and some of the other characters.
I've just downloaded Frost Bite, the second in the series, so will soon be starting on that one!
I liked how different this is from most Vampire books, There are different types of Vampires, which is really interesting. There is just the right amount of action and drama in this book. And a little forbidden romance! Looking forward to listening to the next one. I really want Rose to have someone to love!
Meet Rose, guardian in training, and Lissa, the vampire princess she is sworn to protect. Both attend an exclusive boarding school where lessons take place at night and secrets abound. The book is told from Rose's view point and her voice comes across very strongly. Read about her struggles as she tries to protect Lissa, and grapples with her feelings for her mentor. Teenaged pranks take up some of the story, but there is a good balance between that and darker happenings. Rose matures and develops as the story evolves, from rebellious teenager to a guardian embracing her duty. A great introduction to the series.
Really enjoyed this book, interesting take on the vampire genre but with a good enough story line to keep you interested.. will definitely get book 2
