Publisher's summary

It’s finally here. The long-awaited sequel to the bestselling Unwind, which Publishers Weekly called a “gripping, brilliantly imagined futuristic thriller.”

Thanks to Connor, Lev, and Risa—and their high-profile revolt at Happy Jack Harvest Camp—people can no longer turn a blind eye to unwinding. Ridding society of troublesome teens while simultaneously providing much-needed tissues for transplant might be convenient, but its morality has finally been brought into question. However, unwinding has become big business, and there are powerful political and corporate interests that want to see it not only continue, but also expand to the unwinding of prisoners and the impoverished.

Cam is a product of unwinding; made entirely out of the parts of other unwinds, he is a teen who does not technically exist. A futuristic Frankenstein, Cam struggles with a search for identity and meaning and wonders if a rewound being can have a soul. And when the actions of a sadistic bounty hunter cause Cam’s fate to become inextricably bound with the fates of Connor, Risa, and Lev, he’ll have to question humanity itself.

Rife with action and suspense, this riveting companion to the perennially popular Unwind challenges assumptions about where life begins and ends—and what it means to live.

Good but obviously a middle book

This is a good follow-up to the first boo but definitely a "middle" book in the series. It's interesting to see some of the new characters and different perspectives they bring as well as seeing how our new characters have grown.

The new characters include Miracolina, a tithe that insists on being tithed even when her parents don't want to, Starky, a storked baby(left on a random family's doorstep) who's parents give him up to unwinding and Cam, a Frankenstein like person made completely of unwound parts. These characters bring some new insights on what unwinding actually means.

One small nitpick I have with this book is that you'd think Connor would wise up a bit and be a little less trusting of all of these people. Unwinding for any reason is unimaginable but one of the main reasons parents choose to unwind their kids is "bad" behavior. You know most of it is going to be for petty stuff but with just like any group of people there are going to be bad apples every once in a while too. Connor doesn't seem to get this since he was one of those teens that had the typical bad behavior every teen has and seems entirely too trusting of everyone.

It was interesting to see some of the politics behind unwinding. I thought the political messages added a touch of believability to the story on how people are trying to convince everyone that unwinding is good. Although this was obviously a filler book I enjoyed where it left off and look forward to see where this story goes.

Luke Daniels continues to be one of the best narrators there is.

Perfect

In every way
Story,
performance,
Characters. The perfect storm in an audio book. Read the first and waited trying to buy longer books to get more for my credits. Should have just gotten this months ago.

Buy them all and listen straight through!

This tale brings in the natural next step of unwinding--the Frankenstein monster. The monster raises the usual questions regarding existence and souls, and individual self-determination.

Michael Mason Starky is saved and brought to The Graveyard, and you can see he is going to be trouble from the get-go. He is there to provide a foil to Connor, to show how similar circumstances can lead to differing responses in different people. Connor remains naive despite all his experiences.

This is intense YA fiction, containing all the fears of confused, angst-filled teens. It is a cautionary tale of the powers of government, religion, advertising, and how any horror can actually be justified and gradually accepted.

Luke Daniels is the consummate Youth narrator, and although some of his voicing can get a bit pitchy, he always manages to give distinct personalities to each role.

The entire situation is horrendous, but we still have faith that reason will prevail, and the kids can save the world from itself.

Amazing Quality

These books have been my favorite as long as I can remember reading, everyone I recommend them to loves them and the 2nd book is my favorite in the series. The work done by Luke Daniels compliments the book so well and just wraps it all together! Five stars.
