Publisher's Summary

The heart-pounding sequel to the instant New York Times best-seller, Unbreakable, by New York Times bestselling Beautiful Creatures co-author Kami Garcia.

He is here...and he could be anyone.

Kennedy Waters lives in a world where vengeance spirits kill, ghosts keep secrets, and a demon walks among us - a demon she accidentally set free.

Now Kennedy and the other Legion members - Alara, Priest, Lukas, and Jared - have to hunt him down. As they learn more about the history of the Legion and the Illuminati, Kennedy realizes that the greatest mystery of all does not belong to any secret order, but to her own family. With the clock ticking and the life of someone she loves hanging in the balance, Kennedy has to ask the question she fears most: what is it about her past that has left her Unmarked?

What the Critics Say

"A rare sequel that surpasses the original."(Ransom Riggs, New York Times best-selling author of Hollow City)

"Unbreakable is a haunting, chilling tale that reminded me of Stephen King and Dean Koontz. Creepy places, believable characters with some of the best teen dialogue I've seen, and plenty of suspense. I loved it." (James Dashner, New York Times best-selling author of The Maze Runner Series)

    "Unmarked by Kami Garcia"
What was one of the most memorable moments of Unmarked?

Unmarked by Kami Garcia is the second book in The Legion series. The first book, Unbreakable, was unbelievable! I loved it! Unmarked is just as amazing, maybe even more so. The entire series so far is dark, eerie and incredibly suspenseful.

Unmarked starts off pretty much where Unbreakable left off, Kennedy is in a boarding school, separated from her friends and blaming herself for the release of Andras, the evil freakin’ demon who is now abducting girls who, it seems, have a striking similarity in appearance to Kennedy. Havoc is being wreaked everywhere and even the weather seems to be affected by Andras’s release from Hell. It seems that Andras has found Kennedy at school judging by the weird things that are happening to her. It isn’t long into the book, though, when Jared comes for her and begs her to join up with her friends from the Legion. Although she’s apprehensive about this, she is in love with Jared (and he, her) and despite her guilt, she misses her friends and wants to help get rid of Andras. Even though she knows she isn’t one of them, a true member of the Legion. For those of you who haven’t read Unbreakable, Kennedy didn’t receive her ‘mark’ after dispatching a spirit. This is a true testament of whether or not you are a true member of the Legion, so Kennedy remains, ‘unmarked’. As you get through Unmarked, there is an explanation as to why this is, but for me to give the reveal would be to unleash a huge spoiler so, yeah, I just won’t do that!

Kennedy’s friends, which include the former love triangle of Kennedy and the twins, Jared and Lucas (so glad the triangles over!), Alara – a tough, yet somewhat tender hearted girl with a strong voodoo upbringing, Priest – a home-schooled techie that is brilliant yet entirely way too trusting and Kennedy’s bestie, Elle, who is a great addition to the gang and definitely not Legion. They start off on an extremely perilous journey to stop Andras and it is, indeed, filled with pitfalls, death, and destruction. Make no mistake, Unmarked is not a fluffy, feel good book. There is definitely darkness here and it has an eerie atmosphere that creeped me out. For instance, possessed people doing violent terrible things, which is always a bad thing, in my book. Andras is a scary dude and not someone I’d want to mess with, he knows every deep dark secret or fear that each person has and he uses it against them. Unfortunately, Jared’s biggest secret is let out of the bag and at the worst possible moment – ever!

Along the way, the group runs into a couple of guys from the Illuminati, and there’s a huge revelation that is startling and heart-breaking for one of the gang’s members but it does explain a lot of the questions I had. Interestingly, there’s a bit of a historical component in the book that I enjoyed regarding the Illuminati and its background – whether it’s fact or fiction, I know not, but I still found it quite fascinating!

The story is quick paced, I both read and listened to Unmarked. So glad that I did this! I had the opportunity to get a very different view point on the story that I think that only audio can give me. So, while listening, I couldn’t skip ahead to ease my nervousness about what was going to happen. This is a good thing for me, as I tend to do that! There’s a lot of action and highly suspenseful moments in Unmarked, I mean, HIGHLY suspenseful, and listening to the narrator really builds a level of anticipation that had my palms sweating. The only bad thing was when I was shaking out my rugs and the static electricity almost blew my eardrums out … yeah, won’t do that again.

Bad thing? There’s a cliff-hanger and I really, really dislike those – with a freakin’ passion! Why do authors do this? Seriously, now I have to wait a year for any sort of resolution … uh-huh, yeah, that’s not painful at all – said nobody, ever! That’s really my only complaint and hence 4 stars as opposed to 5. Minus 1 star for making me sweat it out for a year! It’s only fair! Obviously, I so recommend this book!

    "Great story"

But when are authors going to realize that switching the narrator in a series, sucks for the listener? We get a sense of who the characters are by the voices. When they change, the characters change.
Both narrators did a great job but we only need one. I loved this book and am excited for the latest installment. When will it come out?
