Editorial reviews

Not much has changed in the young adult fiction world since the Twilight Saga hit the bookshelves, charming tweens and beyond with a story of lustful romance with a supernatural bent. Waves of like-minded narratives have been riding the coattails of the famous series' roaring success, but few are as thrilling and unique as Colleen Houck's Tiger's Curse. An enchanting story that takes place primarily in India (a setting ripe with potential for the vivid descriptions Houck delivers), Tiger's Curse is grounded in Indian mythology and culture. Annika Boras narrates with Sanjiv Jahveri, and they more than meet the challenges of performing a contemporary story told in a mysterious, foreign setting.

When 17-year-old orphan Kelsey attends a local summer job fair, she feels that nothing is beneath her. One week later, she finds herself temping at a circus, where she is tasked with caring for an unusually docile white tiger named Ren. Given how smoothly Kelsey is able to care for Ren, she is asked to accompany him on his transport to India, where he will return to his owner. With nothing left for her at home, Kelsey seizes the opportunity for this unique experience. She soon discovers that Ren is in fact not a tiger, but a handsome prince trapped by a curse cast upon him many years ago. The story quickly evolves into an engrossing romance between Kelsey and Ren, with a race against time to break the tiger's curse.

Between the exotic Indian landscapes and the Indiana Jones-like obstacles Kelsey and Ren walk into, Boras has plenty of colorful material to work with. From her astonished reaction at discovering of the tiger's true identity to her calculated determination as she pieces together how to break the curse, Boras approaches every scene with keen awareness of her character. Such is a testament to her erudite storytelling. Listening to her tackle such a diverse array of description, setting, and characters is the best way to experience this novel. Tiger's Curse will leave you breathless for days. —Suzanne Day

Publisher's summary

Critic reviews

"A smart, vibrant adventure romance wrapped in a quest… takes the protagonists through adventures that would make Steven Spielberg proud… Full of danger, dash, allegory, and love under the banana tree." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Need to use 1.5 speed!

If you could sum up Tiger's Curse in three words, what would they be?

India Mythology Intrigue (since Tiger and Curse are already in the title :-))

What other book might you compare Tiger's Curse to and why?

The Little Princess for the Indian mythology! The Lightning Thief for the teen living mythology! The author says Twilight meets Indiana Jones--that is true also!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Too "rote" and slow. It sounds like a poetry reading not a teenager's life! I love the book! I like the narration! But Annika Boras is too slow in her narration! Kelsey has more energy in my head. Thank goodness you can change the speed without messing up the vocal tone! This book is perfect at 1.5 speed narration!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, but that is a good thing! I wanted to puzzle out some of the issues and try to figure out what might happen next!

Any additional comments?

Great book for those with middle eastern heritage! The Indian mythology is wonderful!

TOTALLY ENTHRALLED WITH THIS BOOK!

This book is classy, written so well, and the story line is awesome. The characters come alive for me and I couldn't stop listening. I could not get enough and immediately read book #2. I understand the author has just signed to make this book into a movie and I know it'll be great. I am anxiously awaiting the availability of book #4 in this series which just came out this month. Hope Audible gets it in soon!

A little Cheesy but a magical adventure

Would you listen to Tiger's Curse again? Why?

Yes this was a great series I would probably listen to this while traveling though, because I'm not a huge fan of re-listening to books

What other book might you compare Tiger's Curse to and why?

I can't say I can really think of a book all that similar to this one

What about Annika Boras and Sanjiv Jahveri ’s performance did you like?

Annika Boras has a great talent for voice acting that at some points you couldn't tell that it was just her who was voicing all the characters. She does such convincing male voices and Indian accents that I am sure she is part of the reason I loved this series so much

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Where would you go to save those you loved

Any additional comments?

This novel is definitely meant for the young adult reader however it is such a gripping tale that you get sucked in none the less. I had to get over the fact that everyone and their cat, no pun intended, fell in love with Kellsey however she was a realistic enough character that I could overlook it. She reacts when things happen not just accepts them without freaking out.

Awesome story and lovely narration.

Loved reading the book, throughly enjoyed hearing it just as much! favorite moments: the kiss Ren and Kelsey shared when they finished the quest for the fruit. And then Kelsey finally explaining why she had to go home.

Pretty Good!

The man narrating the prelude and epilogue was an awful narrator, but Annika Boras was great. The storyline was good, a wee bit slow for my taste but still engaging.
The romantic relationship was kind of hokey, like come on Kelsey get over it! Her hesitation is a bit forced, but overall the story was pretty good. I would recommend, I just got the second book if that says anything :)

Childhood favorite

I love this series, and have the paperback collection in my library shelf, and haven’t had time to read it in a while, and really craved it. They did an amazing job bringing the characters to life, and putting a voice to Kelsey, Ren, Mr Kahdam, Nilima and Kashan! I never thought it would get better. ❤️

Magical Series

This series is a little slow to start, but the 4 books are all so addictive I couldn't sleep. A little magic (which does not overwhelm book so don't let that scare you off), a little romance, a lot of adventure = one of my favorite series in years.

Fascinating

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this story because it is a new and fascinating look at an Indian folk tale.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The tigers stories were very interesting to me, the romance was a little weak, too much denial on the part of the heroine.

Which character – as performed by Annika Boras and Sanjiv Jahveri – was your favorite?

Ren

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Kelsey first touches the tiger, she shows such fearlessness that it almost took my breath away.

Any additional comments?

I can't wait to read/listen to the rest of the series, I want to know what happens next!
