Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times best-selling author Pat Wrede returns to Scholastic with an amazing new trilogy about the use of magic in the wild, wild west.

Eff was born a thirteenth child. Her twin brother, Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son. This means he's supposed to possess amazing talent - and she's supposed to bring only bad things to her family and her town. Undeterred, her family moves to the frontier, where her father will be a professor of magic at a school perilously close to the magical divide that separates settlers from the beasts of the wild.

With wit and wonder, Patricia Wrede creates an alternate history of westward expansion that will delight fans of both J. K. Rowling and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Great storyline!

This is one of my favorite series. Such a richly built setting and the narrator is perfect for the part.

The ending was a long time coming

As an ecologist, I was actually pretty thrilled at the concept of the climax but it just took forever to get there.

no bad but wouldn't recommend.

I struggled trying to understand what was happening. I wanted to give it a Potter feel but tried to put it in its own class. idk. kudos to the author for the hardwork. not a bad book overall

best book!

this book is a wonderful amazing Fantasy story. involving history and twisting it just enough to include the fantasy elements. the set of twins as the main characters in this book Focus on the double seven Son in the 13th born daughter. one being seen as extremely good luck and the other one as bad luck.

I loved the concept and the story.

I finished all 3. I have lots of feels on the finale but I really just didn't want it to end.

Fantacy Little House

I enjoyed this book. Filled with ideas, feelings, emotions that sated my need for adventure and enough human strengths and weaknesses to make it belivible. Looking forward to next book.

Interesting Premise

This one was difficult for me to rate; the premise of an alternate history and protecting the settlements with magic was fascinating to me, but I just didn't love the book. I was interested in the story in the beginning, but by the end, the plot felt like it had dragged in places and just wasn't as exciting and fast-moving as I had hoped. While I liked the characters, Eff's repetitive whining about things being her fault and being the Thirteenth Child got on my nerves. I don't think this was enough to make me pick up the second book in the series unfortunately.

Good Imagination

Any additional comments?

This author's imagination engaged me. I also liked the fact that I could recommend it to my grandchildren. The author did not fall back on unnecessary explicit sex or bad words to sell the story. The characters were well developed though obvious as to good or bad.It was upsetting at first to have US history so fractured. As the story progressed, it seemed to be less important.
It was a pleasure to listen to the narrator as she brought the story to her audience.
