Critic reviews

"Actress Trini Alvarado gives a performance consistent with her previous narrations in this series. She projects a youthful, but strong character for Alanna; this is her outstanding strength." (School Library Journal)

My childhood

They were my childhood. I reread them often. My kids will read too because they have such good messages.

The twins loved it.

Their only complaint was that it was over too soon.
Thank you for another great installment.

Amazing Narration

Would you consider the audio edition of The Woman Who Rides Like a Man to be better than the print version?

Yes, but only because of the amazing narration by Trini Alvarado. She did a wonderful job distinguishing each character.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Woman Who Rides Like a Man?

The first time the reader meets Kara, Ishak, and Kourrem. Trini's accents for them really added something to the story.

Have you listened to any of Trini Alvarado’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. I believe this to be one of her better one performances.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

(I'm not very good at coming up with tag lines.) Perhaps, "Sometimes you have to forge ahead alone when everyone else is against you."

Any additional comments?

This is really good, in either audio book or book form, and I think the fourth book in the series is even better. If you enjoyed this one, definitely go check out "Lioness Rampant"!

Xenophobic and White Savior Complex

While I acknowledge this was written in the 80s, and there are a lot of things that I was able to forgive in the previous books, this part of the series is very clearly trying to paint people of the Middle East as savages. They even use the word savages when referring to the foreign people in this fantasy world. And the people that are there to change their life forever and make everything that much better are the white savior from the north. Imposing western values because that’s the “right way” to live. While I appreciate the authors early attempt at trying to acknowledge racism, this was not the way to go about it and this particular part of the series negates all of the progress she tried to make previously. I am going to try to finish all the books I’m this universe to see if the author was able to grow but I’m doubtful.

I love this author and series!

I am so glad this series is on Audible.com, I love this author and this series. I always listen to this series when I am working on a new project, it is an easy story to listen to but keeps me occupied enough when my hands are busy. I read it for the first time in high school but I still love it as an adult! I like how her books show the importance of family and tradition but also shows how some change is good; she also shows the importance of women's roles in her stories!
