Publisher's summary

Jacky Faber, rich from her exploits diving for Spanish gold, has purchased the Lorelei Lee to carry passengers across the Atlantic. Believing she has been absolved of past sins against the Crown, Jacky docks in London to take on her crew, but is instead arrested and sentenced to life in the newly formed penal colony in Australia. To add insult to injury, the Lorelei Lee is confiscated to carry Jacky and more than 200 female convicts to populate New South Wales.

Not one to give in to self pity, Jacky rallies her sisters to "better" their position - resulting in wild escapades, brushes with danger, and much hilarity. Will Jacky find herself a founding mother of New South Wales, Australia? Not if she has anything to do about it!

L. A. Meyer received a master of fine arts from Boston University, and is currently the curator and exhibitor at the Clair de Loon Gallery in Bar Harbor, Maine. He lives in Corea, Maine. Katherine Kellgren has recorded over 60 audiobooks including Bloody Jack, which won an Audie Award, a Publishers Weekly Listen Up Award, and ForeWord magazine's Audiobook of the Year.

Superlatives Depleted!

Where does The Wake of the Lorelei Lee rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Right near the top. It's not the prose or the story (which are good) so much as the fantastic performance by the narrator. It's pure entertainment that makes you taste the salt air and feel waves. If you are interested in nautical history or tall ships, if you like historical fiction, early 19th century in particular, you should try this series. Start with Blood Jack and enjoy.

What did you like best about this story?

Ms. Kellgren is a one woman tour-de-force. There are so many, many characters, accents, regional nuances and languages in the series and she manages to not only capture them but make them real.

Which character – as performed by Katherine Kellgren – was your favorite?

She IS Jacky Faber.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I definitely did. However, I'm getting pretty nervous because there are only two books left in the series!

the reason I joined audible...

What did you love best about The Wake of the Lorelei Lee?

I loved best what I have loved about all the other Bloody Jack audio books (2 things actually). First, Jackie, the heroine. Just go meet her; you'll see what I mean, Second, Katherine Kellgren's performance--it's like a one woman radio play. Amazing. Third, (Ok, so I lied when I said 2) L.A. Meyer is just a great writer. Even in the later books when you are pretty sure Jackie really isn't going to really die this time, listening to Meyer's imaginative ways to get her out of things and his accessible-yet-not-insipid-in-any-way style keep you hanging on to every word.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wake of the Lorelei Lee?

Well, If I told you, it wouldn't be very sporting of me. Trust that there are the usual complement of more-or-less trustworthy navel officers, good friends, fiendish scalawags and pirates to keep you interested.

Have you listened to any of Katherine Kellgren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Brilliant. I cannot believe how consistent she is with her voicing from one character to the next, as well as one book to the next. Lovely singing as well.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Well, it's really more fun than moving, but, even so, it has it's moments.

Any additional comments?

This really is the reason I joined audible. Our state's digital library only had books 1-7 available, and they said they couldn't get this one (though I notice they have it now), and, man, these are addictive, I NEEDED #8. I see #9 is now available. Off to download it right now. Oh, yes, I am.

Best read series ever

Katherine Kellgren has won awards for her narration of this series and she deserves every one. This particular book is fun because it includes historical characters from Chinese Pirates to Early Australian Political leaders.

Jacky is growing up!

Another fine book and inspired dramatic narration. One thing that LA Meyer does with Jacky is to tell her story in the historical context (much of it accurate) of the times she lived in. I'm not sure why people think this is a young adult book per se besides having a youthful main character. I has many adult themes and looks at the world through Jacky's eyes seeing the good and bad of life played out. The sexual innuendoes are gentle and the violence is not gratuitous. Be sure to start with book #1 and you'll be hooked!

Great adventure at sea!

The last couple of books in the series had sections that dragged but this one is pretty much nonstop action at sea (my favorite setting!) It's almost believable that with all the adventures Jacky has had, she would run into old friends (and enemies) in practically every chapter. There is even a cameo appearance by a hero of the Patrick O'Brien sea series. And there are some great new characters, including a Chinese pirate queen, who apparently is a real historical personage. Kellgren never disappoints as the only possible voice for this series!
