Publisher's Summary

Natasha

I'm a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I'm definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is 12 hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won't be my story.

Daniel

I've always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents' high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store - for both of us.

The Universe

Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

    "This was cute but flawed"

I am solely reviewing the narration here. It was nice to have multiple readers since there was more than one main character plus one was a boy and one a girl. The problems I have with the narration are 1) The narration was way too slow. I had to speed it up and it still felt slow. 2)The woman narrating 17 year old Natasha sounds like she is 40. It's fine to be 40, I'm in my 30's but it's strange to hear such an adult voice narrating a 17 year old. 3) Some of the accents were done very poorly. I know I sound like a harsh critic, but I think that the audio industry is so large now that it is possible to find the perfect narrator for each story. These guys and gal just weren't the right fit.

    "Sweet Little Book"

This is a sweet little book of a Jamaican girl about to be deported who by happenstance meets a Korean-American boy, conflicted about his path in life. Both fall in love in the span of a few hours. Her writing style is solid, but this one is okay in comparison to "Everything, Everything". The story is implausible and the female narrator was annoying. Overall, a cute story, but not as great as it was hyped to be. Still worth the credit.

    "Beautifully written love story"

This was perhaps the BEST book I have read/listened to in a long while!! I loved everything about this story and fell in love with the characters as well. I have recommended this book to all of my friends. BTW, I'm a 43 year old, mother of two who is a hopeless romantic!!

"My Favorite YA Book of the Year"

I was on maternity leave over the summer when I received an early copy of The Sun Is Also a Star. Thankfully my mom was around that day to watch the baby, because I couldn’t put it down. Not only is Nicola Yoon answering the call for more diversity in YA Literature, she is also creating compelling, honest, and memorable characters in her fiction. The Sun Is Also a Star, which is a finalist for the National Book Award, is told from the alternating perspectives of two teenagers – one a Korean American boy who is on the “doctor tract” despite his proclivity for poetry; the other, a Jamaican girl who is desperately trying to save her family from their imminent deportation. Over a single day we watch how fate weaves its way into their relationship and their futures – together and apart. I recently got to listen to the audiobook, which was beautifully performed by Bahni Turpin, Raymond Lee, and Dominic Hoffman. Turpin and Lee inhabit the main characters in such a way that ensures Yoon’s work will become essential listening.

    "book for young teenagers"

I bought this book because it claimed to be the best book of 2016. it was not even close. I can see how teenage readers would enjoy it because the two main characters are 17 and act very much like 17 year olds. but as an adult it just didn't do it for me. it had some nice moments and i enjoyed the "side story chapters" of minor characters but the overall plot and story were silly (and not endearingly so) to me.

    "Unreal"

This book was so unnatural and unbelievable that I could not carry on past a few chapters. I purposely put it away and came back to it a few days later but it was no better. I like honest and sentimental but it all seemed so forced. Thankfully there's a refund!

Exceptional and inspiring in every way. Beautifully written. Characters one actually cares about even ones you would think insignificant. So sad when it ended which I don't experience very often. We need more from your positive thinking Nicolai Yoon.
