Story
Geoff and his friends live in Phocaea, a distant asteroid colony on the Solar System's frontier. They're your basic high-spirited young adults, enjoying such pastimes as hacking matter compilers to produce dancing skeletons that prance through the low-gee communal areas, using their rocket-bikes to salvage methane ice shrapnel that flies away when the colony brings in a big (and vital) rock of the stuff, and figuring out how to avoid the ubiquitous surveillance motes.

Story
It isn’t easy to get a group of bestselling SF authors to write new stories for an anthology, but that’s what Elizabeth Anne Hull has done in this powerhouse book. With original, captivating tales by Greg Bear, Gregory Benford, Ben Bova, David Brin, Cory Doctorow, Neil Gaiman, Joe Haldeman, Harry Harrison, Larry Niven, Vernor Vinge, Gene Wolfe, and others, Gateways is a SF event that will be a must-buy for SF readers of all tastes, from the traditional to the cutting edge; from the darkly serious to the laugh-out-loud funny.

Story
Boss loves to dive historical ships, derelict spacecraft found adrift in the blackness between the stars. Sometimes she salvages for money, but mostly she's an active historian. She wants to know about the past--to experience it firsthand. Once she's dived the ship, she'll either leave it for others to find or file a claim so that she can bring tourists to dive it as well. It's a good life for a tough loner, with more interest in artifacts than people.

On June 30, 1908, an object fell from the sky, releasing more energy than a thousand Hiroshima bombs. A Siberian forest was flattened, but the strike left no significant crater. The anomaly came to be known as the Tunguska Event, and scientists have never agreed whether it was the largest meteor strike in recorded history - or something else. Alien artifacts have been uncovered since the 1908 event, and a new star drive is discovered.

At his death in 1988, Robert A. Heinlein left a legacy that almost single-handedly defined modern science fiction. But one of Heinlein's masterpieces was never finished. In 1955, he began work on Variable Star, a powerful and passionate tale of two young lovers driven apart by pride, power, and the vastness of interstellar time and space. Now, the Heinlein estate has authorized award-winning author Spider Robinson to expand his outline into a full-length novel. And the result is vintage Heinlein.

Sassinak was 12 when the raiders came. That made her just the right age: old enough to be used, young enough to be broken. Or so the slavers thought. But Sassy turned out to be a little different from your typical slave girl. Maybe it was her unusual physical strength. Maybe it was her friendship with the captured Fleet crewman. Maybe it was her spirit. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t let her resign herself to the life of a slave. She bided her time, watched for her moment. Finally it came, and she escaped. But that was only the beginning for Sassinak.

In Mercedes Lackey's Firebird, Ilya, son of a Russian prince, is largely ignored by his father and tormented by his larger, older brothers. His only friends are three old people: a priest, a magician, and a woman who toils in the palace dairy. From them Ilya learns faith, a smattering of magic, and the power of love - all of which he will need desperately, for his life is about to be turned upside down.

I do not understand why they abridge Anne McCaffrey!
I wish I had read the reviews before I bought this book. This is one of my favorite stories, but I felt let down by this. It left too much out. I thought they were supposed to tell you when the book is abridged! Other than that, the reader did well.

WAY to abridged
I love this book...in the original. Whoever abridged it needs a new line of work. There is so much cut out of the story that it's almost unrecognizable. Shame in you for ruining an awesome adventure.

not satisfied
I really love these stories. Anne McCaffrey is a great writer and the narrator was quite good but there was a good chunk of this book missing. Tia was supposed to tell off Tomas about pressure suit safety before going into her shell, you never hear the conversations and Tia's opinions of her other brawn candidates and many others. overall there's 9 chapters in this book yet only 4 in the audio.

Not the best book from this author
The book is so confusing - behaviour not appropriate for the age of the protagonist, devoted but neglectful parents - very little makes sense. I've enjoyed other Brainship books and was disappointed in this one. Perhaps some of the problem is the poor editing - why abridge it?

My trust in the quality of audiobooks on amazon is greatly diminished
This audiobook with Constance Towers as the narrator is just terrible. Instead of “abridged”, it should say is hacked and slashed. Both parts that gave the story it's special something and parts that connected the different scene changes were haphazardly skipped. It was common for there to not even be a 1 second pause between one scene and the next, leaving you confusion as to how things had just progressed.
This book is my favorite of the Brain Ship series, so i am upset that this book has been so mangled by the “editing.” If i did not know the original work, i may have become too confused to be able to follow this glitchy version of the story.

Heavily edited
I love this book. I’ve read it at least a dozen times. I was so excited to listen to it but immediately realized that they heavily edited this story and cut out a ton of what made it so magical to me. All of the extra characters were cut out. I still enjoyed listening to it but i was incredibly disappointed that this was not unabridged.
