What the Critics Say

"The action is fast, individual scenes are tight and dramatic, the language is vivid and rhythmic, and the wealth of minor characters are sharply individualized....An immensely entertaining thriller." (Booklist)
"Pullman once again demonstrates his mastery of atmosphere and style." (School Library Journal)
"Readers first met the intelligent, inquisitive, and independent Sally Lockhart in The Ruby in the Smoke. Now comes this second brilliant bauble, perhaps more foreboding and terrifying than the first, thanks to Pullman's care in creating lively, superheroic characters and then, just as heroically, killing them off." "A great story, but part of the plot is missing!"

First, the good stuff: Anton Lesser is an amazing narrator who makes me hear and see each character differently. His portrayal of Jim is so good that it actually brought me to tears a couple of times. His superb narration outweighs any of the not-so-good stuff.

The not-so-good stuff: I didn't get as attached to the plot as I had with Ruby in the Smoke - I think because it was more about the seamy underbelly of the London rich than it was about the seamy underbelly of the poor, which is much more engaging to me - but I still thought it was well-written.

What was tougher for me to get past was that because of the way the book starts off and brings in characters, I felt almost immediately that I had missed a book in between The Ruby in The Smoke and this one. There are a couple of characters who are quite established although they were not in Book 1, and others have disappeared (like Adelaide) that I really wanted to know more about. I've looked around online and it appears that there was actually another book called The Tin Princess that is not considered part of the trilogy but uses many of the same characters. I'm guessing that's where I'll find the missing pieces. Unfortunately, it's not on Audible yet. If I had it to do over again, I'd read The Tin Princess first before listening to Shadow in the North.

    "A bit too grim"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Shadow in the North to be better than the print version?

I love the story, but I feel Pullman is a bit too realistic when putting his characters through life's tragedies which would be fine if from time to time there were also happy unrealistic endings. I guess you love the characters so much it really is a bit disappointing when they don't ride happily into the sunset. When the story was getting a bit too grim for my taste it was definitely the narrator with his voice and pace that kept me hooked.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Shadow in the North?

    Sally and Frederick's Love scene

Which character – as performed by Anton Lesser – was your favorite?

He does a perfect job for every character

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The death of the dog made me cry

    "excellent listen"

I enjoyed the first book in this series, and was thrilled to continue following the lives of these characters into this book. This story is more complex, and darker than Ruby in the Smoke. I highly recommend this series. The narration is perfect.

    "Another Exciting Tale"

Sally was a strong woman when it wasn't fashionable to be. It wasn't a total happy ending, but Sally made it through again. Another exciting listen.

"wish every audiobook was this enjoyable"

Maybe not quite as good as The Ruby in the Smoke but still great. Supposedly a kids book but do not let that deter you if you are an adult. Colorful characters and a suspenseful, evocative writing style.
