Publisher's Summary

"We want you to do it again."

These words, spoken to Brian Robeson, will change his life. Two years earlier, Brian was stranded alone in the wilderness for 54 days with nothing but a small hatchet. Yet he survived.

Now the government wants him to go back into the wilderness so that astronauts and the military can learn the survival techniques that kept Brian alive. Soon the project backfires, though, leaving Brian with a wounded partner and a long river to navigate. His only hope is to build a raft and try to transport the injured man a hundred miles downstream to a trading post - if the map he has is accurate.

    Story
"Not just for teen boys, but for ANYONE who values Life!"

This sequel to The Hatchet is so well-crafted and just as suspenseful as the first book. Just like The River that Brian paddles down, this story also has many twists & turns that keeps you riveted & inside Brian's head. You truly get a sense of his angst, even if you haven't spent time in The Backcountry. If you have (as I have) you get a true sense of his desperation & struggle to acclimatize when returning home that few understand who haven't experienced the struggle. After many days in true wilderness, I remember how mesmerized I was by running tap water & lights that went on with the flip of a switch. This cognitive dissonance is what drives Brian to return and what moves the plot so beautifully.
My only gripe is that the overly dramatic music is completely unnecessary! The excellent reader is all that is needed.
This book is NOT just for teen boys, but ANYONE who appreciates The Wilderness & wants to understand what is truly important in life.

"a great addition to the series!"

while I personally wish that this story would've maybe been slightly different it's still a great tale. although in my opinion not as realistic as hatchet and brians winter. I felt like the ending was rushed when the author could have cut a few pages of rowing out and allowed some extra pages to give a better detail of the actual rescue. however I still loved the story and how in away it has increased brain's wilderness abilities. if that makes since.

"The book was pretty good I guess...."

The book was pretty good because it talks about how to survive in the wilderness. It felt a little short though.
