Audie Award Finalist, Fantasy, 2014

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson: his debut novel for the young adult audience

More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity's only defense against the Wild Chalklings—merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles.

As the son of a lowly chalkmaker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students study the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing—kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery—one that will change Rithmatics—and their world—forever.

Bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings his unique brand of epic storytelling to the teen audience with an engrossing tale of danger and suspense—the first of a series. With his trademark skills in world-building, Sanderson has created a magic system that is so inventive and detailed that that readers who appreciate games of strategy and tactics just may want to bring Rithmatics to life in our world.

Critic reviews

“Illustrations from McSweeney, fiesty characters, and a complex plot likely to unwind over several volumes, this high-spirited, exciting story will appeal to readers of all ages.” —Publishers Weekly starred review

The Rithmatist contains some very good surprises on the way to a pleasingly nifty conclusion.” —New York Times Book Review

“Brandon Sanderson has created an ingenious new martial art where the chalk is mightier than the sword. In his alternative, dangerous version of the world, brave young soldiers must battle back dark forces armed with the nerves of a warrior and the skills of an artist. It's a fun read with a unique take on fighting where if you can't draw…you die.” —D.J. MacHale, New York Times bestselling author of Pendragon and SYLO.

Mother Duster

This book was more entertaining than I was anticipating based on the description. This went from a reluctant read to a craving for the sequel.

Thank you again Brandon Sanderson.

Exceptional and utterly original

I was captivated by this story by my favorite writer and wondered continually how any one could come up with such an original concept. The intrigue, the depth of insight on Mr. Sanderson”s story was thrilling in every way possible. I was submerged, I was captivated, I was startled by his talent. I must find a sequel to this story. Thank you, Mr. Sanderson for such a fine read: I admire you.

Richard Chamberlain— no not the actor.

Great story and interesting lore

Narrator is spot on, story progressed briskly and plot points were compelling. My only criticism would be on the depth & growth of the characters...they seemed mostly 2-dimensional to me (no pun intended), with only a few character traits to distinguish themselves. I kind of understand why they were written that way, but I would have liked to have a better understanding of their motivations by the end of the story. Other than that, I definitely enjoyed this!

And I may be biased in regards to character depth though, so take my criticism on that with a grain of salt.

Fantastic!!

Easily one of Sanderson's most creative magic systems, and while the writing could use a bit of polishing, it was excellently paced and structured. I fell in love with the world immediately. Character development is a little scarce, but the dynamic is wonderful.
He ran a delicate balance with his use of Red Herrings, but pulled it off well.
I am not usually a fan of this particular narrator, but he acquitted himself well in this work.
Lots of mystique about the world that is not nearly so predictable as in his other novels. Very fresh and original idea.
All in all, it was a very good read and I can't wait for the next volume in the series. Well done.

That was flat-out fun! More, please!

This was a pretty solid good time. It’s rare in the world of “teens learning magic at a magic school” that you get a story like this. The adults are fairly sensible, which was refreshing, and the characters truly grow on you. The mystery kept me guessing, and way very engaging. I highly recommend you give it a try.
