Publisher's summary

Readers of I Am Number Four, The Maze Runner, and Legend will love this exciting new adventure series by the co-creator of the groundbreaking television show Twin Peaks, with its unique combination of mystery, heart-pounding action, and the supernatural.

Will West is careful to live life under the radar. At his parents' insistence, he's made sure to get mediocre grades and to stay in the middle of the pack on his cross-country team. Then Will slips up, accidentally scoring off the charts on a nationwide exam.

Now Will is being courted by an exclusive prep school...and followed by men driving black sedans. When Will suddenly loses his parents, he must flee to the school. There he begins to explore all that he's capable of - physical and mental feats that should be impossible - and learns that his abilities are connected to a struggle between titanic forces that has lasted for millennia.

Critic reviews

"Mark Frost has created a wonderfully inventive and exciting tale where one exceptional teenager must discover the truth about his family...and himself. The mysteries are unexpected and the mythology is impressively original. A remarkably suspenseful ride. I can't wait for the next installment!" (Chris Columbus, director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone)

Sci-fi meets Harry Potter meets hardy boys

Immediately engaging story with a lot of mysterious details and action that moves the story forward. It’s a little over detailed and it’s full of continuity issues. But still fun. I couldn’t figure out the intended audience. The main character is in high school and there’s a few language bits that indicate high school, but the story is written about 6th grade- lots of he said and she said quotations in the narration.
Narration ok. Awkward for the female characters.
Spoiler alert- Dave is not a guardian angel I’d like- a little close for comfort, ‘eh Dave?

Ok, I'm sucked in.

I've been a fan of Frost's books for a couple decades now, so I was quite pleased to see on on Audible.

The story flow is a bit formulaic, but I like the characters, conspiracies and suspense. It has particularly good geek appeal. And, despite these seeming lukewarm words, I found it engaging and thought provoking.

Mostly, I just got hooked and can't wait for the next book in the series.
