What the Critics Say

“It's hard to imagine a better way to enjoy this historical fantasy than through the expert narration of Jamie MacKenzie…MacKenzie smoothly portrays multiple characters with a variety of British, Irish, and Scots accents. The frenzied eagerness of the greedy "arachno-sapiens," the indignant squabbling of the Newgate prison ghosts, and the simpering voice of the sea witch give this audiobook performance a three-dimensional effect.” (AudioFile)

"The better "Harry Potter" book 1!"

It is unfair to compare ALL books about magic boys to Harry Potter. Still: We kind of have too. Still this is better then the first Harry Potter! When that is said: The Lost Heir: The Gryphon Chronicles, Book 1 is not only better the Harry Potter, it is better than a lot of other books! E.G. Foley made here a magical world i would love to return, again, and again! The Gryphon Chronicles starts out here with a BANG! This is so fun, and i feel so lost in the world E.G. Foley created! I really can't say how much i loved this! Other then this way: Get this book NOW!

And what about Jamie du Pont MacKenzie? Oh i did not mean that rhetorical, so i have to ask again: What about Jamie du Pont MacKenzie is bad? I say nothing! 10 hrs and 20 mins feels like almost 10 minutes! The pace, the volume and the way he reads this i so amazing! So i could not give him under 5 out of 5! I think we found a goldmine in Jamie du Pont MacKenzie and E.G. Foley. What a goldmine! I am so happy i read this!

"A fun read but borrows many themes from others"
    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the book, it was a good listen which I was happy to keep turning on during the car trip. Younger listeners were riveted and couldn't wait. Well read listeners will be quick to note the many borrowed themes in the book, orphan gets magical powers at 13, main characters making stupid decisions, history lessons, and an over protective body guard. Despite this I don't think anyone will be disappointed with this book.

"Enjoyable, even if a bit derivative"

This is the first of a series of children novels set in a steampunk Victorian era. Think Harry Potter during Queen Victoria's reign with some steam mechanicals. First let me say that I and my daughter did really enjoy this novel, in fact my 8 y'old daughter finished it in 2 days. The characters are diverse and interesting. The relationships between the characters are what really makes this novel. Additionally, the narration was in my opinion, spot on for this novel. Although, the narrator is not exactly a "master of voices"..his "young girl voice" definitely sounds like a grown man pretending to sound like a young girl, to the point that I wondered at first if he was mocking the character. But his voices are consistent, and overall his cadence and speed was excellent.
Now for the story itself, as the title and cover infers, this is a story of a young boy, Jake, who is the long lost heir to an earldom. The current earl tries to kill him to prevent being deposed and all sorts of ugliness ensues and is revealed. During the course of this plot line we meet all sorts of magical creatures and characters. This is where things get a bit derivative, you will recognize many of these characters from various other stories and movies. For example, the sea hag in this story is almost identical to the sea hag in The Little Mermaid. Jake's origin story is very similar to Septimus Heap, additionally the ghost interactions also reminded me of the Septimus Heap series. There are other examples, but I think you get what I am saying. Despite this, all the characters work. I liked them all, and I even really liked the evil antagonist.
The story never gets too dark for young kids, and avoids being to simplistic for adults. I highly recommend this novel as a fun family friendly listen.

    "A fun and imaginative read!"
    Any additional comments?

This was awesome!! Such a fun and exciting read and one I'd highly recommend. The summary sums up the story so I'm getting straight to my thoughts.

Jake was such a worthy hero. He is an orphan and has learned how to live by his wits. He was brave, strong, smart and resourceful. He learns of who he is, yet it doesn't change him. He even sees ghosts and gets these strange powers, he has people trying to kill him and finds himself confronted with weird animals, yet he stays true to himself.

Danni is Jakes' best friend and does her best to keep him out of trouble, which is hard because trouble tends to find Jake no matter what!! She is smart, loyal and brave and I loved her character, though my heart broke for her when she was on about her family.

The plot of this was fast paced and engrossing. It has everything a great middle grade fantasy should. We have magic, mythical creatures, mystery, mayhem, plot twists, action and plenty of adventure. It was enthralling, to say the least.

In all this was an incredibly entertaining read and one I know I will revisit from time to time. It captured my attention from the start and kept me gripped the whole way through. From it's lovable characters, to it's engrossing story, this is a must read! I loved everything about this and will be diving into the next book as soon as I buy it. Highly recommend!!

The audio of this was fantastic!! Jamie du Pont MacKenzie was a thrill to listen to. He was totally engrossed in the story and brought it to life. He gave each character their own personality and had so many tones that it was a pleasure to listen to.

    "Great Narration and Story"
Would you listen to The Lost Heir again? Why?

Yes. I would because it is a fun story and I would let my kids listen as they get older.

What did you like best about this story?

I love a good fantasy pauper to prince story. I liked the characters and how each of them were unique with their own stories and personality traits.

Which character – as performed by Jamie du Pont MacKenzie – was your favorite?

Hands down, Dani. She is a great story of loyalty and friendship. Those are good messages to portray.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

SPOILERS: I loved Jake's reaction to Dani's death and the ensuing scenes following. When they visit Beacon house. That was one of my favorite scenes as well as the frog scene. Its just well written and funny.

    Any additional comments?

Overall, my FAVORITE thing about this book is the narration. It is SO GOOD. I feel fully immersed from the very beginning.

    "What an Imaginative Adventure!"

Narration - Jamie du Pont MacKenzie - Really Good!
Jamie has a lot of character voices (one of them sounds just like Hagrid from the Harry Potter Movies - it made me smile:)
Lots of characters and he does a great job of differentiating between them all.

The story is terrific! Jake is an orphaned street urchin in London who suddenly gains a weird little 'ability' to make objects move, oh, and he can see ghosts. He has an adorable side-kick Danni, who spends most of her time trying to keep Jake out of trouble with little success!

This is an adventure with lots of creatures, a talking spider, a sea hag, fairies, mermaids, a Griffon, a Cherub, you get the idea. It's light and fun with a lot of action and the audio is a really enjoyable listen. I will say that it did get a little Scooby Doo for the last hour and a half or so. We get a lot of the evil details just told to us in the narrative, and there are a lot of details, but I really do think this will be a fun series to continue on with.

"That is,indeed,a Griffin he is riding on the cover"

This book is too much fun! There is heroism, compassion, villainy, humor, sarcasm. badassery and wiseassery. Jake learns that he has more than one friend in the world, and that magic and magical beings are real. In some ways, this is Atticus O'Sullivan meets the Artful Dodger and Dani is a younger version of Cinderella. There is a Guardian, an angel, mythical monsters, a young genius, shapeshifters, a giant spider who sounds like Renfield, and more! If you've ever been 12, or know someone who is 12, you will enjoy this tale of good vs evil. The story is well-crafted, and the characters are even better.
Jamie performs this fine fantasy with a flair and adds depth and voice to the character interpretations in a fully engaged manner.

    "Family wide appeal"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

My Son (9) chose this book and loved it, immediately begging for the second in the series. Some time later, I was on a road trip with a work colleague and we decided to listen to it. The narration was fantastic, with different voices and accents given to each character. We really enjoyed the adventure, and when we finished our work travel and were a few chapters from the end still, my colleague felt compelled to purchase it too, so she could hear the end.
I thoroughly recommend this audio book to anyone who enjoys adventure fantasy novels.
