Publisher's summary

Don't Sweat. Don't Laugh. Don't draw attention to yourself. And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.

Gene is different from everyone else around him. He can't run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn't hurt him and he doesn't have an unquenchable lust for blood. Gene is a human, and he knows the rules. Keep the truth a secret. It's the only way to stay alive in a world of night—a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.
When he's chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene's carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him. He's thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but is it worth the cost of his humanity?

Critic reviews

“Runnette does an excellent job of slowly adding layers of emotion and confusion to the character, and his cool delivery of the narration adds to the suspense.” —AudioFile Magazine

“The scenario of Andrew Fukuda's ‘The Hunt' is so wildly fantastic (in a good way) that narrator Sean Runnette delivers just what this story needs: a clear, steady voice.” —The Los Angeles Times

Nice plot and delivery

What made the experience of listening to The Hunt the most enjoyable?

The actual writing itself was great! AND of course the sincerity of the characters within the prose.

What did you like best about this story?

The setting and the actual vampires. blood drinkers should be vicious and disturbing.

What does Sean Runnette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Sean is fluid but the only problem I had was sometimes the lead character seems to forget he's being hunted and he keeps talking instead of moving. I know its a good story when I"M yelling at them myself.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Something like (See vampires the way they should be and Pretty and shiny Aint it!)

Any additional comments?

Just make the lead character run! more! and stop thinking so much when its time to get going. :)

Unique & intriguing.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Hunt to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version. so I cannot compare the two versions.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that the story is obviously about vampires, but the author never uses the word vampire.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene is an important plot twist & I don't want to spoil it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

I can't wait to read book 2. I often am unsure what to spend my credit on, but not for the next 2 months.

Great Story but Narrator needs revising.

The story is good for being unique in a sea of books where every story is the same. There were plenty of times where I was caught off guard by what was coming up next. There were also a few places where it was obvious what was coming up. I really think that Sean Runnette needs some work in my opinion. He does a great job reading the story to you but there are places where he does some shouts or screams that come across very cringy and not believable. Overall would listen again.

Good story, just got to get past the narrator.

Decent story line but the biggest drawback for me is the presentation style of the narrator. Dramatic pauses during sentences that made me think William Shatner in all his Star Trek glory was reading to me almost had me give up on the book in the first 20 minutes because it was so distracting. Once I was able to tune out the obnoxious presentation style I became engrossed in the plot and was glad I stuck it out.

Interesting

Would you try another book from Andrew Fukuda and/or Sean Runnette?

Yes

Any additional comments?

A very interesting combination of a vampire book with the Hunger Games and Planet of the Apes. The first 3/4 is a fun sociological study. It was so well done and had me thinking that I could not wait for the Hunt to begin. That didn't go as well as I hoped. It was as if he simply lost steam once he got to the end and just slapped something together. I also wonder what was going on with the narrator. There was no emotion or inf lexicon or anything. Most of the characters sounded alike so I had a hrd time knowing who was speaking. I did thnk for awhile that the main character has to hold back his emotions pretending to be a a vampire so maybe that's what the narrator was going for. The longer the book went on the more I feel like that was giving him more credit than he deserves.

Scary vampire creatures

What did you love best about The Hunt?

I Loved how it wasnt your typical Vampire story, they were scary, disgusting creatures that were nolonger human, they drooled, ticked, slept upside down, could walk on all fours on the walls and ceilings like spiders and would eat you alive if you started to sweat not just suck your blood..I loved the fact that the main character made it that long living beside the creatures with so much confidence and perfection, I would have been eaten in a day..I love stories that scare me and this one and the first one did...

What other book might you compare The Hunt to and why?

I just read this book called The Farm by Emily Mckay, it had creatures that were similar, disgusting and would eat you on sight, the only difference is it had humans in camps collecting blood for the creatures...

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked when the human girl revealed herself, I guessed from the beginning she was one, and that was right after she convinced the creature boy to wear the sunscreen and run out in the sun and try and eat the humans being farmed, she knew he wouldnt make it and we'll he didnt get that far, that was soo gross and kinda funny...Also when the humans escaped and were running down the river and they were being chased but did see how many were really chasing them until the lightning struck and blinded them for a short period but showed that there were hundreds of the ticks following them, omg, I was shaking for them...

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I dont know but it would make a kickass movie...

Any additional comments?

Cant wait for the third.....

A Teen vampire story... but a FANTASTIC one!

I really enjoyed this book, FAR more than I expected. The story had me on the edge of my seat almost the whole time. INCREDIBLY action packed. I finished it in 3 days... and I haven't been on a road trip or anything! It took the place of television, especially the last day when I started and finished part 2. I was on the edge of my seat the last 5 hours. It was insane!

It's a great take on the vampire genre, bringing in the weird and intense differences between vampires and humans. It's got all of the elements of a great dystopian survivor story. It's very hard to explain or go on about this book without giving things away. LOTS of twists and turns! As I said, I couldn't stop listening and am planning on purchasing The Prey (book 2) when I finish writing this review.

WORD OF WARNING!
This book does have it's gross moments. The vampires salivate at the thought of humans (heepers) but they talk about how the drool runs down their chins and pools on the desks and floor. Thick blood dripping down their chins as they eat bloody raw meat drips into a bowl that fills up and they drink it at the end of the meal. There's also a couple VERY vivid descriptions about what happens to certain vampires in sunlight. I DID gag a couple times.

But all of that creates such an amazing picture of the world of the book, and I felt it added to the fear and intensity, although it grossed me out a bit.

Scary, exciting, mysterious and action packed, I don't understand why The Hunt doesn't have more of a following!

Sean Runnette makes any story better

Thus was an inventive book on a world that now was almost exclusively populated by vampires. A bit if a teen book but holds its own.
