Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - The best-selling Hunger Games trilogy is, without a doubt, a cultural force. She probably didn’t know it at the time, but in writing her series Suzanne Collins set the standard for YA dystopian adventures. Dystopian fiction wasn’t new of course, but something about this trilogy really sparked the imagination of young readers, setting the stage for a plethora of new young adult books to enter the market. If you’re interested at all in this increasingly popular genre, this Essential is the perfect gateway book. —Emily

Publisher's Summary

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning?

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

"I was so obsessed with this book that I had to take it with me out to dinner and hide it under the edge of the table so I wouldn't have to stop reading... The Hunger Games is amazing." (Stephanie Meyer)

"Brilliantly plotted and perfectly paced." John Green, (New York Times Book Review)

    "Terrible reader; great story"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

I love these books and have read them many times. Don't make the mistake I made and buy all three books until you decide if you can stand the narrator. She really doesn't fit the main character, makes all the guys sound like surfer dudes, and doesn't really have a range of voices. Even my kids were really disappointed and started suggesting other readers from other books we've listened to as better people for this one. As my daughter said,

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Carolyn McCormick?

Someone who sounded the right age

    "Really enjoyed this part!"

I started listening to this and got my daughter caught up in the saga as well! We loved listening to this in the car on our longer commutes! We are now in a lull in the second book after the constant action from this one. The narrators were great! They bring you right into the story so you feel as though you are right there with Catniss & Peta!

    "Extremely well done..."

I don't think I can say enough good things about this series. It isn't just a good read but a profound though provoking look at humanity and youth and personal struggle. I just enjoyed it so much I didn't want it to end.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I got the book because i really liked the movie trailer, however I was disappointed. The book is written in a simple language and aimed at a younger audience.

    "An Awesome Read!!!!!!!"
Would you listen to The Hunger Games again? Why?

Everything seemed so authentic. The characters, the plot, even the narrator. Carolyn McCormick did a spot on job with the narration. I could imagine every moment, memory, emotion that each character experiences and that sensation would permit me, to once again, bask in the awesomeness that is THE HUNGER GAMES!

What did you like best about this story?

the authenticity of the plot, the vulnerability of the characters and the illustration done by Carolyn McCormick.

What does Carolyn McCormick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I felt every pain, joy, heartache, distress, repulsion, love- every emotion felt by the characters, especially Katniss, which made me see her for who she really is - a child, a brave, vulnerable, inexperienced and clairvoyant child, whom i have grown quite fond of.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

From the moment Effie Trinket pulled that name from the basket (Primrose Everdeen) to the final seconds in the arena when Katniss pulled out those berries, I've been embarking on a bittersweet journey filled with excitement, fear, sadness and joy! a plethora of emotions that kept me on the edge of my seat with a desperate need to know more!

    "Great Story!"
What did you love best about The Hunger Games?

Katniss the strong female heroine. Forced to lead her family and make the ultimate sacrifice for her sister Prim.

What did you like best about this story?

The burgeoning love triangle between Katniss, Gale and Peeta. How the description of the landscapes within the story transported me. I could feel the desolation of District 12 and the freakish grandeur of the Capitol.

What aspect of Carolyn McCormick’s performance would you have changed?

Nothing, Carolyn's reading of the story was very compelling. Her voice was soothing and it echoed the ebbs and flow within the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The ending made me anxious to read the next installment. And I can not wait until the film arrives in theaters this May, although I know it will never live up to the book.

    Any additional comments?

Thanks to Kindle and Audible books, the Hunger Games was bought to life. My life and I enjoyed every minute that I spent enthralled in this world.

    "Truly a pleasant surprise"

My nephew had to read this over the summer heading into his freshman year in HS, I expected a book very suited to teenagers. I found a book, well suited to kids in HS, but that contained a wonderful thought provoking story, stocked with very believable characters put into a difficult situation by their government.

While this is a "kids" book, I think most adults would really enjoy it. Good story, well read!

I listened because my children had all read the book; it was a great listen. We had a great time discussing it together. Many times I would find myself just waiting to drive again so I could jump back into their world. I am in my late 40's and enjoyed this as much as any sci-fi book.
