Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - The best-selling Hunger Games trilogy is, without a doubt, a cultural force. She probably didn’t know it at the time, but in writing her series Suzanne Collins set the standard for YA dystopian adventures. Dystopian fiction wasn’t new of course, but something about this trilogy really sparked the imagination of young readers, setting the stage for a plethora of new young adult books to enter the market. If you’re interested at all in this increasingly popular genre, this Essential is the perfect gateway book. —Emily

Publisher's Summary

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning?

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

    "An Addiction"

Best Addiction I've had since Twilight and Harry Potter.... not that the stories compare, they're all three different, but the need to finish the series is the same. You won't be able to put your i-pod (or other listening device) down. Be prepared to feel the need to purchase the next book before your next credit is on your account!

    "Fantastic..... Brilliant...."

This series Is the most interesting story i have ever listened to. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. Suzanne Collins paints the picture perfectly . I feel as-if i have seen the movie. I logged 48 hours of driving time and didn't feel it at all listening to the first two books of this series. I highly recommend it!

    "Absolutely Awesome!"

I absolutely loved this book! The story was spell-binding and the narrator was first rate! I will definitely be buying the rest of the books in this series and would highly recommend this book to others! Once I started listening, I kept working on projects around the house so I could keep listening and finished the whole book in one day. It was that good!

"Grabs You From The First Moment"

I couldn't stop listening to this book- it sucked me from the first chapter. And it's not a book that would be just enjoyed by just young adults. Anyone who's looking for something different and something to be completely engrossed in, I would highly recommend downloading this one!

    "Well worth listening..."

I bought this audio book because it was offered at a discount so I stocked up with a few titles. I wasn't expecting to be particularly impressed. In the first few minutes I was reminded of Shirley Jackson's, "The Lottery" and was afraid this would be a poor imitation, but was soon impressed on many levels.

The characters were well developed, and the behaviors and feelings were believable and drew me into the story. The horror of the situation, and the environment was believable. It reminded me of reality TV gone too far, and I could actually believe there would be an audience, enforced or otherwise, that would eat up the drama and violence, yet there was no emphasis on violence. It wasn't necessary, the tragedy and violence of the situation was easy to feel through the emotions and eyes of the main character.

In one scene during the games the story was so compelling, and heartbreaking that I was brought to tears by the story, which isn't something that usually happens with me. I read a lot, and have multiple books going at a time, both audio and Kindle versions and it really takes a well developed character and situation, and this book has it.

I normally wouldn't have purchased this book, but I have to say it was well worth it. Don't buy it for the anticipated violence, buy it and listen for the wonderful characters Collins has created.
McCormick's narration was also very good, telling the story well and and with the right emphasis throughout.

    "Shallow Characters, Shallow Themes."

Another reviewer "hit the nail on the head" comparing this to a beach read. I somehow finished this book, but regret wasting my time.

Characters are not developed enough for the listener/reader to feel sympathy for them or care about their fates; cliches are used frequently (i.e. scared to death, I felt like I was hit by a ton of bricks) which betray a lazy author; the plot line builds but does not deliver on its promise; the main character is stereotypical, inconsistent and fabricated; the sinister leadership of the nation of Pannem (spelling? don't care if this is wrong) is not fleshed out and the reader does not understand the landscape that the characters live in...

I could go on and on about the flaws in this book. But just a warning will suffice: if you are looking for anything of substance, skip this before you waste your time and a perfectly good credit.

"The description does not do this book Justice!!!!!"

I purchased this book because of 2 things, the high rating and it was on sale. I read the description and would not have bought based solely on that. After I began to listen, I wondered why the description wasn't better and why haven't my children read this. I asked them and they all said they did and it was great. I said why didn't you tell me??? They said everyone at school (High School) said it was really good and so they read it. So then when it was over I went on and see there is 2 more books, I bought both of them and am excited to get started. I highly recommend this book. It is one of those, for me, that I didn't want to stop listening.

    "Similar feel of Orwell's 1984"

I like it...well written - good story, a "page turner" for people like myself who enjoy the futuristic genre. Although somewhat formulaic at times, I could still get lost in the unfolding events. It wasn't very deep, but certainly thought provoking. I'd place it amongst my favorite reads. One word - Entertaining.

    "I couldn't stop listening"

I bought this book because it was a Nancy Pearl recommendation and it sounded intriguing. A post-apocalyptic story in which teenagers are chosen by lottery and forced to fight to the death? How could that be anything but depressing? The book was not at all what I was expecting. This is a great story with unforgettable and well-developed characters that looks what happens when the people with power do everything they can to force others into submission through fear and intimidation.
In spite of everything that the main character goes through, she manages to retain her humanity and her sense of right and wrong. Part of what keeps Katniss on track is her relationship with her fellow competitor, Peeta whose kindness and devotion are so strong that Katniss it helps her see things more clearly. Although this book is intended for teenage readers, I found myself in love with the characters and hooked on this unusual coming of age story.
Now I can't wait to see what happens in the next two books.

"Loved the book so much more than the Film"

It was the publicity surrounding the release of the DVD that got me interested in listening to this book, What a great decision that was, the book is very well read and had me gripped from the moment it began.
I sped through the story in a couple of days, it was a truely captivating with the characters coming alive in the mind.
The story of poverty and oppression has been done before but this seemed so refreshing to have it done so well, I am really looking forward to the second and third books that I also have downloaded from Audible.
Today I watched the DVD and whilst it was enjoyable it did not do the book justice.
But this is a review of the book and as such it is a 5 star cracker of a story.

    "Young Adult?"

I never did understand the need to squeeze book (or any other media or art form) into genres such as 'Young Adult' or 'Teen'. I am 48 years old and thoroughly enjoyed the Harry Potter series. A such is the same for The Hunger Games. A well written (and in this case narrated) book I have just finished Part 1 of the Audio Book and am looking forward to the second part.

    "The Hunger Games"

The narrators voice is incredibly annoying, not enough emotion in her voice at all. Very flat and grating. Such a shame as there is over 10hours of her talking but I'm not sure if I can listen to the whole book!! Great story ruined by the narrator who puts no passion into her narrating. Such a shame, very disappointed.

    "Brilliant & addictive."

I love this trilogy and have collected the books in all formats, paperback, kindle e-book & audio, as well as having the film on blu-ray.
Covering a wide variety of social, economical & political issues, as well as having the added edge of believability in this age of reality television, The Hunger Games has me hooked from beginning to end no matter what format i use. (i have the series in paperback, kindle e-books & audible audiobook)
The writing itself is gripping, engaging and fast paced and the narration flows very well.
The characters are well rounded and the relationships between them are strong and well developed.

I have been listening to audiobooks from a very young age and although i have my old favourites that have grown up with me as well as some new favourites, this series definitely ranks in my top 5 listens.

I am fairly new to dystopian fiction and haven’t read many in books in this genre but i have compared this trilogy to my other favourite dystopian trilogy, Divergent by Veronica Roth.

I am huge fan of the 'Young Adult' genre, although the genre title always amuses me as you couldn't find another category that spans a much wider customer base than the title suggests.
From Harry Potter to Twilight, Narnia to Divergent this series holds its own in a very competitive genre and will be a firm favourite with readers of all ages.

"good book shame about the reader"

I enjoyed the story but didn't like the reader. Very unconvincing when she had to do male voices. Also a lot of mispronounciation even allowing for the differences in American and English. Would have been better to have had several readers. Am not going to listen to the sequels for this reason. Have bought them on Kindle.

    "Great book, robotic reading."

This is a fantastic story, full of drama, action and excitement, as well as a very well written main character who you instantly become attached to, despite her prickly personality. The book is clearly read, although the woman's voice was difficult to listen to, to begin with. She is quite robotic and doesn't inject much life into the characters, she sometimes misjudges the tone or idea behind some of the speech. However you soon get so wrapped up in the story that you forget about this and it only becomes a minor irritant every now and again!
