Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - The best-selling Hunger Games trilogy is, without a doubt, a cultural force. She probably didn’t know it at the time, but in writing her series Suzanne Collins set the standard for YA dystopian adventures. Dystopian fiction wasn’t new of course, but something about this trilogy really sparked the imagination of young readers, setting the stage for a plethora of new young adult books to enter the market. If you’re interested at all in this increasingly popular genre, this Essential is the perfect gateway book. —Emily

Publisher's Summary

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning?

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

"I was so obsessed with this book that I had to take it with me out to dinner and hide it under the edge of the table so I wouldn't have to stop reading... The Hunger Games is amazing." (Stephanie Meyer)

"Brilliantly plotted and perfectly paced." John Green, (New York Times Book Review)

    "Great Reading Experience"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have recommended this book to friends. The writing is wonderful, the story compelling and the characters engaging. This author is a great storyteller. I found myself instantly liking the characters and caring what happened to them. The story kept me riveted; I had a hard time stopping and couldn't wait to get back and find out what happened next. I never felt disappointed or bored. Carolyn McCormick is a great narrator. I think she gave Katniss in particular a maturity that helped me respect and admire her, so that I never thought about her age.

What other book might you compare The Hunger Games to and why?

Although I know this is suppose to be in the same category as the Twilight Saga I found it completely different, Its true the main characters are teens, but I did not feel like I was reading a

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene is when Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place, although there were no scenes in the story I did not like.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

There is a movie being made, which is what peaked my interest in the book (I'm not a teen or a Twilight fan). I don't remember the tag line being used, but I would say

    Any additional comments?

I felt the violence was handled beautifully. Enough detail to let you know what is happening, without gratuitous gore. I never felt

    "Incredible"

I've read hundreds of books, and I consider some of them to be absolutely fantastic. This book, however, raises the bar so high that I wish I hadn't given out those five star ratings. Gripping, emotional, great world building, excellent pacing. Can not recommend enough.

I think the narrator is great too, despite what some reviewers have said.

    "Compelling and gripping story"

This story grabbed me in the first 5 minutes. I would sit in my driveway for an extra 15 minutes in order to continue listening to the story. It may be written for young adults, but this old adult can't wait to listen to its sequel and see the movie.

"Hard to put down! A must read!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to others. After much pushing from a friend, I read this book. So glad I did! Amazing!

I love how Suzanne Collins writes. She has spent most of her career in the TV industry and it definitely shows. She can draw you in with her suspense. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a good read. It isn't just for teenagers.

I read from almost every genre but I do love a good science fiction. When not listening I'm camping with my Girl Scouts, baking or at work.

    "What an incredible listen"
Where does The Hunger Games rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is my first audio book and the quality of it has sold me on purchasing and listening so much more.

What other book might you compare The Hunger Games to and why?

If I had to put this on a shelf with like books, it would be right next to Lois Lowery's books

Which character – as performed by Carolyn McCormick – was your favorite?

I think McCormick especially enjoyed doing the voice of Haymitch. His gruffness tuly came through.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The collaboration between Katniss and Rue was delightful. It was as if the two blossomed into believing they were capable of anything. When Rue was killed so abruptly, it came as such a shock and Katniss' reaction was so touching.

    "Amazing"
If you could sum up The Hunger Games in three words, what would they be?

Uncomparable, futurstic-possiblities sadly, Unable to stop even until the last word of mockingjay/

What did you like best about this story?

I love the characters and how eachone grows. How truly you could imagine this happening, We all have seen at least one reality show and have become immune to most violence, how long will it take for us to combine the two?

Have you listened to any of Carolyn McCormick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Although i havent hear C.M.'s performances before i believe she is so creative when it comes to voices, exclamations, and all around enjoyable.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed and i cried and there were times i wished i could be there to help the characters.

    Any additional comments?

I recomend this book to anyone but be warned have tissues at the ready

    "Made my commute a joy..."
Where does The Hunger Games rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I loved this so much that I did not hesitate to get the whole trilogy.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hunger Games?

I could relate to Katniss's anguish when, during the games, she worried about Gale's feelings as she demonstrsted her love for Peeta.

What about Carolyn McCormick’s performance did you like?

Carolyn McCormick is able to express joy, despair, anger, fear, all without being over the top or losing track of the speakers.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Katniss volunteered to take prim's place in the games, my heart was in my throat. So moving.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Hunger Games to be better than the print version?

Story is spectacular. The performace was good but a little sterile. I can't wait to get the next one!

"Why is this so hot (no pun intended)?"

Don't get me wrong, I liked this book. I'm not sad one of my credits went to getting it, but it didn't really stand out. I've read this story before and this spin wasn't sufficiently unique or stand out to make me think otherwise. It really read like a mash up of The Long Walk and Running Man by Richard Bachman (Stephen King's pen name). It is a really good mash up, but I never really stopped thinking it was a mash up. I have started the second book and will happily finish the series simply because it well written.
