Maddie and I, are a dad-daughter combo who love audible books. She has recently started to write reviews also. I hope you can differentiate.
So I had originally rated this book 3 stars but in light of my daughters obsession with listening to this book over and over and over and over and over and over....(ad nauseum) I felt I needed to bump up the rating to 4 stars. I am not exaggerating when I say that she has been listening to this book every night as she goes to sleep for over a month. She just keeps listening to it again and again. From my viewpoint, I felt that this book was good but not in the same league as Ms. Cleary's "Romana Quimby series". These, I believe, are Ms Cleary's first attempts at writing, at least they are her first published attempts. They were written back in like the early 1950's, and were written in "modern Portland, OR". What this means is that they are set in early 1950's Portland OR, and as such represent the sensibilities and thought patterns of that time. The result is that the stories are a bit dated, and for today's adult audience a little silly. My daughter on the other hand loves this, she keeps asking me to explain some of the (now defunct and dead) aspects of that society...what she calls "the olden times"...for example I found myself explaining what a phone booth was.....
The writing and storytelling in this series is not as polished or as sharp as Ms Cleary's later works but it is still good. Mr. Harris' performance on the other hand is actually quite entertaining and was one of my favorite parts of listening to this book. I don't think many adults will love this book, it is simply too dated. But that being said, I certainly did not mind listening to it in the car with my daughter (at least the first time) and my daughter LOVES it, so in the end I give it my recommendation.
We first heard one of these books when we got it at the library and instantly fell in love with how Neil Patrick Harris read it. I found this collection for my daughter for Christmas to go with her new Kindle. She has listened to this book numerous times already. Good thing it is digital because she literally would have worn certain parts out because she loves certain characters so much. I highly recommend this collection to anyone young and old!!!
We haven't finished this book yet, but my son loves listening to the adventures of Henry and Ribsy while we're driving. We often have to sit in the driveway to finish a chapter. My only complaint, just minor, is the switching of narrators. I'm sure my 5 yo didn't mind, but I would have liked just one, preferably Neil Patrick Harris.
This was a fun book for the kids and the parents for long car ride trips when you need a change of pace from the video games and movies.
My 7 year old son loves this book and listens to it over and over. We've had this book for a few years now. The 1st time I put it on, he wasn't too thrilled because he wanted to watch a movie, but he ended up loving this collection of books.
My son's favorite story is the one where Henry and Ribsy go fishing with his dad.
My son likes Neil Patrick Harris' narration the best.
It's a collection of 5 books.
Not only are these books entertaining, but they also provide a positive message. The kids in these books play outside with their friends, they have to earn money to buy the things they want, and they have responsibilities.
Our children (ages 7 and 9) have listened to the entire Henry Huggins collection two years in a row and they have loved it from start to finish both times. Cleary's stories are full of real-life adventure. Characters face the problems of growing up and gaining independence. They make decisions and love with them. They deal with grown ups. They work toward goals. They put up with each other and find ways to get along. These stories are beautiful and they encourage out kids to have a positive attitude.
I recommend this collection to boys and girls alike, as young as age 5- adulthood. The stories are wholesome, amusing and very relatable. Mrs. Cleary's winning characters and wry observations about daily life have certainly held their value over time. Mr. Patrick Harris is a delightful narrator. We find ourselves enjoying the stories ourselves long after our two boys have fallen asleep.
Stories are endearing and wholesome and the narration is wonderful (Neil Patrick Harris wow)
When Ribsy got lost
Neil was the best. He did the voices beautifully and we would immitate him doing Ramona!!
The kid Larry who was home alone all day and his mom was struggling to make ends meet.
This is a trip back to a simpler time. The language and relationships are a pure joy to listen to. I found myself listening even after my son was out of the car and would rewind back to the spot so he wouldn't miss out. Just lovely!! we are sad there are no more and will see about the Ramona stories!!
