I enjoy reading series and very rarely read stand alone series. I mostly read romance and sci-fi & fantasy.

"Research on kissing and hand holding"

Once again I can't say any thing bad about his book or the series. It is actually kind of annoying. I would like to give some sort of critique but can't because the book was so good. Others may disagree with me but would be wrong.

Sydney has to deal with so many things in book that I almost feel bad for her but, then I realize that she gets to spend time with a guy like Adrian and I don't feel so bad for her.Not that having to deal with potential crazy vampire hunters isn't worthy of some sympathy it diminishes when I read just how much time she spends with Adrian.

I normally don't give away spoilers in really good books like this one but I will say this the best part of the book was when Sydney was all confused about kissing and she made some comment that went something like this, "The books I've read on dating have mostly advised on when to have sex which is useless because I'm still trying to figure out when to hold hands." I just found that to be very typical Sydney needing to read and do research to figure out a relationship.

You would know why this is amusing if you read the book. So go read the book!!!

I find these Mead series a place to park all of the adolescence anxt that I lestened to for almost 20 years as a therapist. They are always current as well. This series reminds me of the TV series "Lost girl." I am waiting for book #3 to come out on 2/15. I also enjoy the characters from the past that show up. I know that we have not seen the last of Rose. Somehow I see Demetri as a Mr. Spock fiqure - don't know why ... enjoy!

    "Golden Lily"

I have become accustomed to Emily Shaffer's voice--it took me a little time, but I find her male voices very distinctive, which is hard for female narrators to do, and she makes Sydney really admirable and likable. Emilly is very talented, but I understand that no narrator is everyone's cup of tea. Loads of people love Dick Hill, and I like him, but I find his voice easy to tune out! Rather like a history professor I once had. Dick's voice hasn't grown on me, but Emily's has.

I like the two, connected series of Richelle Mead's, but, of the two, I find myself enjoying the Bloodlines series more. Sydney is confident, hard working, responsible and ingenious. It's been interesting watching her mature and grow--Mead is dealing with all the characters in this series really well. She seems to be allowing them to grow at their own pace, which is refreshing. I'll be listening to the third book in the series tomorrow--can't wait!

"Miriam's Review for The Golden Lily"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Richelle Mead. She's an amazing author, and the narrator for this book does a terrific job.

What other book might you compare The Golden Lily to and why?

Um, I'd compare it to books like Twilight, The Mortal Instrumentsor Evernight, because, yes, it's about vampires, and yes, it is about teenagers, but it's so much more than that. It's really interesting because it's a part of a spin-off series that follows Vampire Academy and it answers all the little nagging questions like, what happens next?

Have you listened to any of Emily Shaffer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listend to her in Bloodlines and I like her. I hope she continues to do this series. To be honest, I think she fits Sydney's voice. It was a little weird hearing her sample of Last Sacrifice. I also love the way she does the other charictors' voices.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes! It made me want to throw my reader across the room. I also enjoyed a lot of laugh-out-loud moments.

    Any additional comments?

I absolutely, positively, without a doubt love this book!

"A fun trip back into this world"
What made the experience of listening to The Golden Lily the most enjoyable?

I actually find the narrator fun. I like how she differentiates the voices and pulls the emotions of the characters in. However, I didn't give her a 5 star on performance because I thought a lot of the time that she dragged the words out too long, making the characters sound drunk when they weren't. I thought her narration on previous books was better, so I am taking off a star for that. Otherwise, it was great.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I still love Adrian and love him even more with his growth and maturity

Which character – as performed by Emily Shaffer – was your favorite?

Sydney- I think she does a great job at getting into her head.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh a lot

    Any additional comments?

The Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series are both so much fun, and Richelle Mead has created a world I love to get lost in.

    "Wonderful storytelling!!!!!"
If you could sum up The Golden Lily in three words, what would they be?

I am a 58 year old grandmother. I read the first Vampire Academy book at the suggestion of one of my 20 year old nieces. I used to read all of the time but now I have found listening to be far superior when the story is good and the narrator is talented. I loved being read to as a child and I find coming back to it is really a treat. I love stories with mystery, romance and most importantly characters that I would like to know. Richelle Mead is a wonderful story writer. Her characters are believable, they are complex and humorous. I was hooked by the second book. Then when I listened to the 4th one, I found the narration added so much. I may be older but my spirit still thrills to a great story. After finishing the story of Rose and Dimitri, I had that depressed feeling when ever I finish a really good series. By the time Bloodlines came around, I was skeptical that Sydney would be able to carry the story as well as Rose did. The plot of this series has so much potential and I am really looking forward to the next installment. The developing relationship between Sidney and Adrian is so enchanting and warm that when I listen, I find myself smiling or laughing out loud. Summing up a book like this in three words is not possible for me. The depth that Richelle writes with makes these characters interesting. I listen while walking, gardening or just chilling at the computer. We all age but the spirit goes on and there is a 20 something woman inside me that still relishes the fantasy. When you stop dreaming and imagining, you might as well be dead. I especially like the conflict of the black and white thinking of a young adult as life happens and the time comes to question what you believe the truth is, I like the good and decent people who are removing the rose colored glasses and being tested, finding out what they are made of. The most important feature of this though is the way Sydney and Adrians love begins and starts to blossom. She makes him want to be a better person. And it is all done with witty dialog. It's so entertaining when Sydney acts bossy or knowledgeable and Adrian just sits there smiling and listening, enjoying just being with her. I also love that Sydney is so brilliant but her social ineptitude makes her so clueless.

What does Emily Shaffer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Emily Shaffer, if you ever read this review, I'd like you to know how very talented I think you are. I really enjoy your male voices, Dimitri's soft Russian accent and Adrian's snarky sort of British accent. Can't tell where he got it but I think what you bring to the story is as important as what the author does. You've got great dialog, characters and an interesting, entertaining storyline and your voices, male and female are flawlessly blended so that the listener would believe there are different people doing them. I read some of the negative and nasty comments others have written and I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I also believe that constructive criticism is different than just nastyness. I want you to know that this listener is really looking forward to more books read by you. I also like Susan Erickson, who reads the IN DEATH series for JD ROBB for the same reason. Flawless continuity from one character to another. Try to take the nasty comments in stride and know not everyone thinks so.

    "The story is getting good"
What did you love best about The Golden Lily?

I love the developing relationship b/w Sydney and Adrian. I had my reservations in the previous book, but I like how they are connecting over their mutual feelings of being disappointments to their families.

What other book might you compare The Golden Lily to and why?

They are obviously close to the Vampire Academy books, since the characters are the same. But, while Sydney is not Rose, she is strong in her own way. Where Rose is outgoing and outspoken, Sydney is more reserved. She is easy to underestimate, which would be a big mistake for anyone who does so.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Sydney taps into her natural witchy powers to locate Sonya, even though it goes against everything she has been taught. She believes the friendship with the Vampire is just as important as her values.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes, and I did.

    Any additional comments?

Even though the characters overlap with the Vampire Academy, the series is good for every different reasons. It doesn't read like a spin-off; although, I wish that we saw more of Rose and Lissa since we see so much Dimitri. And I am still curious about what happened with Tasha and Christian!!
