Publisher's summary

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff”, she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

One of my favorites

This was my third time reading The Duff, and it won't be the last . It's a funny, relatable, frustrating, and an all around good read. The author easily illustrates the insecurities that many young adults, particularly females go through during adolescent years.
The narrator did a great job depicting the characters emotions and sarcasm.
"Wesley Rush doesn't chase girls, but I'm chasing you." I literally squeal with delight every time I read that line! If you haven't read it I would highly recommend you give it a shot!

Did not like the narrator

The story was meh, but I think the nail in the coffin was the narrator. I just really didn't like her. She made everything sound so childish and she just bothered me. The story isn't horrible but I feel like not much really... happens. This is the rare case of the movie being better than the book, in my opinion!

totally different from the movie. in a good way

Totally different from the movie. Not in a bad way though. I enjoyed this a lot better. I think I would have like it even better if I hadn't read it on audible as the narrator sounded too young and didn't really fit the story. The male voices especially that she did just sounded terrible.

Loved this Book!

I was unsure as to whether I wanted to listen to this book or not and I am so glad that I did. I saw it was going to become a movie and I love to read a book and then see the movie to compare. Even if you don't want to see the movie, definitely read or listen to this book. I think every girl can relate to the main character. Even though the ending was predictable, it was a feel good funny love story.

PG-17

This book was more vulgar than I had expected, but in a way it was written just as the mind of any 17 year old girl would have thought it. I like how the book incorporated the "readings" and "assignments" the girl conducted to build on her view of the world. I felt like her "democrat" or "liberal" views were honestly irrelevant to the story plot and added for the benefit of the author's ability to express their opinion. I would recommend it to a high schooler, but with a bit of reluctance because of the vulgar language used throughout. The reader did a great job developing the characters with voice changes, etc.

Simply Fantastical!

I have to admit, I watched the movie first. It was cute, but I thought I'd check out the book also. Boy, was I surprised! This book was so very different and so much better than the movie. It is an entirely different story, and I urge everyone to give it a shot. You won't be disappointed!

R-rated lauguage

Great story. Great performance. Just very tainted by the constant use of f*** both as profanity and in the vulgar sense. Movie at least cleaned that up to get a PG-13 rating. For a teen novel, this was really a turn off to me. If it’s not considered appropriate for teens in a movie, why on earth is it ok in a teen novel?? Heads up— a lot of teen sex but at least written in a non-explicit manner.
