Publisher's summary

In Tempest Rising, Tempest chose to return to the sea, following in her mother's footsteps and forging a relationship with the selkie Kona. Now many months have gone by, and she yearns to see her family again. Life under the ocean is full of rigorous training to eventually take over the throne, which leads to Tempest's powers growing and manifesting in new ways. When Tiamat, Tempest's power-hungry nemesis, attacks Tempest's brother Moku on land, she returns to his side, which also brings her back to her old flame, Mark. But was the attack calculated to get Tempest out of the way? As the battle rages, Tempest's two loves will collide to both protect her and force her to choose. And when the biggest casualty of all befalls the merpeople - the Queen loses her life - will Tempest be able, or willing, to take over the throne?

New Kind of Shifters

I almost stopped reading this in the beginning when I realized it is a Young Adult book. I am glad I kept on reading. Even though it is definitely YA, there is enough of a good and different story to peak my interest. The narrator is good with the various voices even the males. Although I don't usually enjoy YA sereis, I am probably going to delve into the next books in the trilogy. I have gotten use to the young narrator voice now and that helps. The narrator's voice definitely defines it as a YA.

love this book! don't understand the low ratings

If you could sum up Tempest Rising in three words, what would they be?

Mermaids are the new vampires

What did you like best about this story?

I love the whole book. Great story about teenage angst and issues and mermaid and selkie folk lore. I'm almost through with the second book and I am still totally into it. I'm 33, but I can still relate to this story.

What does Casey Holloway bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She's a wonderful narrator. Definitely one of my favorite young adult narrators.

Any additional comments?

If you like any books about Celtic folklore, mermaids, selkies or any other mythical or supernatural creatures, try this series. This is good stories that is age appropriate for 15+, but also great for adults. This story has a sweet romance, but without the constant gratuitous sex scenes that ruin adult paranormal romances. Love it.

Annoying

First of all, the different accents were annoying and very overdone

I added this book to my TBR list back when I was still a teenager and part of me wishes that I had been able to read it back then because I probably would have enjoyed it more.

First of all, I expected that learning Tempest was a mermaid was going to be this big reveal, but instead she just casually mentions she's turning into a mermaid a couple of chapters in and has apparently always known it would happen.

She almost seems bipolar or to have a split personality disorder or something. Tempest starts a chapter saying she won't pity herself, then does nothing else but that the rest of the chapter. Not to mention how hot & cold she is with all of her male relationships. She definitely does not deserve Mark or Kona. She's incredibly immature overall. "That's not fair" might as well be her personal slogan.

In the end, I was only able to get about three-quarters through the book. I was so bored with the story & annoyed with the main characters that I decided to stop reading it altogether.
