Publisher's summary

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Mistborn Trilogy, Brandon Sanderson, comes the first book in a new, action-packed thrill ride of a series - Steelheart. Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.

But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his will.

Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart - the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning - and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He's seen Steelheart bleed.

And he wants revenge.

Loved it!!!

One of Sanderson's best, this story is EPIC, pun intended. I went in to this with some trepidation, as I really like high fantasy - this tale fits the sci-fi genre better, but I loved it anyway. You won't be disappointed.

Great book of a different kind of Super-Villian

I enjoyed reading this book. It took some time to get into the plot, but the plot got better and by the end I was clamoring for more. Don’t let the “made-up” slang of this book annoy you, once I got over the slang, the book became better instantly.

Great Power Brings Great Pomposity

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book is a new take on superpowers, and more likely what would happen if people got them. People would likely use them to benefit themselves rather than being benevolent benefactors to society. I found the characters engaging and the right amount of plot twists.

What did you like best about this story?

It's a bit like a mystery that you're solving as you read through the book. All the clues are there, but will you catch them?

Which scene was your favorite?

The final fight seen was great. It's the scene with the big 'tell' on all the little secrets and mysteries that have been percolating.

Any additional comments?

Enjoyable book and I'll likely read the next.

Brandon Sanderson always weaves together the most intricate and entrancing stories. This one takes a spin on superheroes that is unique and refreshing

Excellent story - great author

This is a must read from Sanderson. Very cool story, and it's a nice change of pace for him. The only reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars is because I reserve that for something truly special (like Mistborn). I can't wait to read the sequel

Worth its weight in wet gold.

Do yourself a favor an Read it for the metaphors. it's an excellent fantasy read about human power and responsibilities, but just read it for the metaphors.

Heart thumping thrill ride!

Aweesome! This book kept my heart racing through every chapter. The only thing that made me pause listening to this book was exhaustion. Brandon Sanderson delivers again!

Not Sanderson's best work, but still good.

I'm a fan of Brandon Sanderson, who I initially found when he finished the sword of truth series for the late great Robert Jordan. He's a great writer, and I try to find all his books. While I don't think this book was his best work, I still liked it. The premis of the series is a popular one right now (bad supers). Don't miss this book.

The Making of a Hero - well done!

It doesn't read like an epic fantasy although the author seems to be a master of that particular genre. The language is younger to match the main character's age and the superhero theme of the book. I love the way this author refrains from using vulgar words yet still conveys the proper emotion. The scenes involve battles and death, but in a way that doesn't focus on gore and cruelty. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I always feel better when good triumphs over evil at the end of a story.

The main character, though lacking superhuman abilities, was armed with all the necessary elements needed to make a hero. A tragic event that motivated him to fight a super villain, a beautiful sidekick/love interest, a team/family he grew to love and yearned to protect. He was an underdog you end up rooting for. He was an endearing goof that grew into a man.

I didn't expect to enjoy this story as much as I did. I loved the gadgets, the world building and the ultimate conclusion. The kind of book that would entertain you as well as your kids!

P.S. I'm also glad that the author refrained from killing one of my favorite characters in this book.

Sanderson does superheroes

Not what I expected from Sanderson but enjoyed the entirety.
His world building and character development top notch as usual but there lacks true urgency and fear it takes the events and does not create the suspense it should.
