Publisher's summary

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Mistborn Trilogy, Brandon Sanderson, comes the first book in a new, action-packed thrill ride of a series - Steelheart. Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.

But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his will.

Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart - the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning - and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He's seen Steelheart bleed.

And he wants revenge.

Sanderson continues to keep me hooked.

I loved reading the Mistborn trilogy years ago, and grabbed this book on an Audible deal a few weeks back. After the first several chapters, I was hooked, and am going to be grabbing the rest of the Reckoner series once I place this period.

Sanderson is slowly becoming my favorite author.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. The premise is engaging and puts a new twist on the superhero genre.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the overall theme of the story. It kept a good flow and never lost my interest.

Which scene was your favorite?

Prof coming for David in the tunnels. Don't know that I can say more without giving anything away!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Without question, David in the bank. Again, I'm afraid I'll say too much!

Any additional comments?

I only wish that it was longer. The upside is that there's always Firefight to read/listen to after Steelheart.

Loved it!

I loved this book. I loved the premise, the characters, and just when you think you know what's going on - a twist! If you enjoyed Sanderson's other books, you will enjoy this one.

Excellent start to the series

I enjoyed this book because of the narration and colorful descriptions, which were as clear as they need to be without burdensome details. The characters are believable, and the villains are as close to alien as can be and still be somehow understandable. I will get the next book.

Excellent! Refreshingly absent of sex & profanity

Great story that was entertaining and had twists and turns, romance without sex and hardly any swearing.

Good book and narration

I enjoyed the story and characters in it. I will look into the next two books and see if they are just as good as the first.

power corrupts, those without it become heroes

This book! Yes. Try it internet stranger :)
It's all been said already. Distinct and interesting non-superficial characters, a unique and compelling world with palpable darkness but enough hope to keep you going, humor, superpowers mundane and fantastic, unpredictable plot points, satisfying action aplenty, villains to hate and underdogs to love.
I immediately got the next two after finishing this one. It's good! The story and characters have weight, the superpowers feel like something we haven't seen before, and it's an easy listen without having to be trivial to achieve that.
The narration is solid. The characters are easy to distinguish and the male and female voices are recognizable and not awkward to listen to.

Starts a bit rough, Sticks the landing

During the first half of the book I thought this Sanderson book was going to be a rare miss for me. Luckily by the time I got to the second half I was much more invested.

I thought the foreshadowing was a bit heavy handed in some parts. Three out of four of my mid book guesses were spot on, and the fourth wasn't far off. At first it bothered me that I guessed most of the twists early on, but I got invested enough in the implications of those twists to remain intrigued.

Not my favorite Sanderson story but by the end I was more interested in the sequel then I thought I would be so I'd call that a win overall.
