Publisher's summary

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Mistborn Trilogy, Brandon Sanderson, comes the first book in a new, action-packed thrill ride of a series - Steelheart. Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.

But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his will.

Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart - the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning - and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He's seen Steelheart bleed.

And he wants revenge.

Fantastic story as usual, somewhat po voice acting

I'm enjoying the story as I do most of Brandon's work but the voice actor imitating one of the main female characters is so irritating and fake snooty sounding. Ruins the immersion. It's a poor imitation of a woman's voice.

It's a good start and towards the end got better..

I would have to qualify this a preteen or younger book. The writing gets better as the book goes.

very fun read

This book reminded me of The Boys on Amazon, but better. There were a few plot holes in my opinion, but nothing major that takes away from the story. I love the characters, they're all very different and MacLeod reads them very well. David's obsession with metaphors is hilarious and in my opinion, a great running joke. I'm excited to get into the next book!

Good not great

More juvenile than I expected. Story was fun and pace was good but in parts it got repetitive and the language is very young at heart. Certain aspects of the story felt played out overtime but I’d say worth a listen but not a must listen

Great as Young Adult Fiction

The target audience for this book is for teenagers. As an adult I found it to be a mindless and quick read. The characters were rather shallow and the story was too smooth without enough real setbacks.

It was okay

I had to get used to the narrator's voice, a bit high pitched. The story line was mehhhh. Overall, I could have passed.

Great for lovers of comics & super heroes/villains

This was a great start to a new series for me. I totally love the whole world taken over by super villains challenged by a small group of rebels who band together to make things right again. This was such a fast paced, action packed book. The world building was amazing and the super powers and creativity all around was spectacular. David was a great main character. He was a perfect Epic fact spewing geek, dying to join the Reckoners to kill Epics but also to get his own revenge. He's smart, kind of dorky but funny and eager. I loved him from the start. However he was a little too good at getting himself and everyone else out of jams with his improvising. It all kept working out too smoothly. The other characters were really done well too. Abraham and Cody were my favorites.
I'm a comic junkie and I like knowing how things work as long as it doesn't get too out of control. I didn't think that the descriptions of the gadgets and weapons or battles were too drawn out. Everything moved along pretty consistently and at a good pace as far as I was concerned. I listened to the audiobook and it flew by. The narrator did an excellent job. I can't wait to start book two.
