Publisher's summary

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Mistborn Trilogy, Brandon Sanderson, comes the first book in a new, action-packed thrill ride of a series - Steelheart. Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.

But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his will.

Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart - the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning - and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He's seen Steelheart bleed.

And he wants revenge.

A bold story

This is the type of story that sneaks up on you. I absolutely love the way the author portrays the villains in the story, and all the clever situations the story takes you through. The narrator is top notch, channeling emotions into the scenes and giving each character a voice. From the prologue, a terrible thing happens and the narrator's voice cracks while he describes it, making it feel more real.

Awsome!!

Brandon Sanderson breaks ground moving away from his fantasy (middle earth) style novels and starts off running. I don't know of many writers with as fully rounded and well developed characters as Brandon creates. I can't wait for the next installment of this series.

Unexpected twist

The story overall is pretty standard YA. I already knew of the other two books, so I could pretty much expect what would happen. The setting and plot was still interesting, and I like most of the main characters. However, I cannot stand the main character, David. He’s supposed to be smart but makes a lot of dumb, impulsive decisions and gets away with it because of luck.

However, there was a really good twist I didn’t see coming. I fully expected it to be centered around David, and then it wasn’t, so props to that.

Performance was good and so was the story. Shame I don’t like the main character though.

Great for YA and adults alike(minus foreshadowing)

Another great job by Sanderson. the only way I find it to be more geared toward YA is in the pacing and the foreshadowing.
personally I love fast-paced books so that's not a problem.
the foreshadowing though is definitely a bit more heavy-handed. and I think (most) of the twists were predictable in concept (if not detail) because of it.
despite this, I found the story great!
If you enjoyed his other fast-paced books such as the second Mistborn saga and you don't mind a slightly more obvious plot then usual for him. it is a great read

But can he write superheroes?

Yep. He can do that. It's not perfect but it's a good start to a series that only improves. If you like superhero stories, read it.

Loved it!

Great futuristic scifi! An awsome cast. rated PG. LOTS of action. No offense language, just implied. Good story for mixed company.

Fantasy Revived

As far as fantasy goes this book was interesting. But it seemed better suited to a young audience. I finished the book but felt that the Epics needed fuller background development. If fantasy is your thing, it’s worth the read.
