Publisher's summary

"They called her Water Claire."

When the young girl washed up on their shore, no one knew she had been a Vessel. That she had carried a Product. That it had been carved from her belly. Stolen.

Claire had had a son. She was supposed to forget him, but that was impossible. When he was taken from their community, she knew she had to follow. And so her journey began.

But here in this wind-battered village Claire is welcomed as one of their own. In the security of her new home, she is free and loved. She grows stronger. As tempted as she is by the warmth of more human kindness than she has ever known, she cannot stay. Her son is out there; a young boy by now. Claire will stop at nothing to find her child...even if it means trading her own life.

With Son, the two-time Newbery Medal - winning Lois Lowry has spun another mesmerizing tale in this thrilling and long-awaited conclusion to The Giver.

Critic reviews

"Claire's story stands on its own, but as the final volume in this iconic quartet, it holistically reunites characters, reprises provocative socio-political themes, and offers a transcending message of tolerance and hope." ( Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Open endings..

I love Lois Lowry's books! The only thing I dislike is when the books end! She leaves them open ended and easy to imagine your own endings, I just always find myself wishing there were more:). Forever a fan ❤️.

LOVED

This was a great book, especially if you have read all of the books in the Giver quartet.

Totally wonderful

I loved it. However, my thought are, will there be a continuation to this story?
when it ended I was expecting more. The narrator was terrific.

A perfect ending

I have waited years to finish reading these books. I made excuses for myself, I was too busy with college and then teaching. But last year my 7th graders read this book and I was reminded how much I enjoyed it. Don’t wait years like I did. Read them. Then read them again. Then read them to your children. They have so many important things to say about family and society and love. In a world that can seem very dark, these books are a great reminder that grace wins.

Son review,

I absolutely loved this book. Lois Lowry did a great job at this utopian and dystopian novel. It does a great job wrapping up the series.

Not as good as The Giver, but good

I haven't read the other 2 books in this series, but The Giver is definitely the best so far. This one was good, and could be stand-alone, however there are many references to The Giver that you wouldn't understand or see coming. I had some gripes about it, but I don't regret purchasing.

Wished it was about Jonas and Gabe right after escape

This was a decent book. I wouldn’t have choose the story line to go how it did though, but it is ok. The whole training thing was a little much. There’s no resolution for anything regarding connections back to where they came from (other than Claire). I just think so much more could have came from it. I don’t even understand how the place they came from took away sun, or why Jonah got away on a bike but Claire had to use a boat, and how the boat interactions didn’t impact anything sooner. That said, and looking past those things, it’s still a good and worthwhile read.

Water Claire

Excellent narrator for all the characters.
The fourth and final book brings suspence, thrill and closure. As a child fights to reunite with lost family.
